It will feature an adult con temporary music format, aimed at listeners in the 25 to 54 age range. And it will have "full service" programming, as they say in, the trade, with, hourly newscasts, frequent weather information and special informational features. Of course, this all sounds very similar to what you now hear on some other local stations. But the folks at WTPI want to assure you that their product will somehow manage to be ever so much better. STATION PROGRAM director Mark Edwards asserted, "WTPI will bring Indianapolis radio into the 20th ctntury." How so? Edwards elaborated.

"Our mix of the most entertaining, informative personalities in town, the best music and special features will make the station very listenable for long peri ods of time." Last Monday, which happened to be Discovery Day. an emissary from the WTPI publicity section dropped by The Star's TV office to emphasize the point. Dressed in a Columbus costume, the courier of fered us a small map of Monument Circle (site of the station's studios), and the female voice which came from behind the ill fitting' beard proudly enthused, "Your world will no longer be flat when you listen to WTPI." Remember, this is show busi ness, where hyperbole isn't the most important thing. It's the only thing. BUT ALL the promotional puffery aside, the new entry in the local battle for radio listeners should have some good things going for it.

particularly among its staff of an nouncers. The important morning shift (6 to 10 a.m.) will be handled by Mark Elliott, who comes here from WFWQ in Fort Wayne. Elliott previously worked in Cincinnati and Dayton. Ohio, and Tampa, Fla. The other key members of the station's air staff all are broadcast veterans with experience at various local radio stations.

Same music format, same age range among "targeted" listeners. The music'will include a mix of popular current music and adult contemporary songs of the past 20 years. Also planned are special station promotions, including some contests offering a variety of prizes, among them tickets for "almost every event at the Hoosier Dome," said Edwards. The station will also be giving away tickets for the Barry Manilow concert at Market Square Arena Oct. 20.

Special series programs will include Dick Clark's National Music Survey. Saturdays at 7 p.m.; Jack Carney's Comedy Show, Sundays at 8 p.m., featuring comedy material recorded over the last 30 years and touching on a different subject each week; and Dr. Demento, Sundays at 10 p.m., which features "demented discs, mostly music." WTPI PLANS' to involve itself in community activities, and in fact has already begun, having spon sored last month's Tommy James concert at Circlefest '84. It will also sponsor a local concert performance by Shcena Easton Nov. 7.

WTPI's spot on the FM dial. 107.9, is a frequency that has been vacant here since WIFE FM went off the air eight years ago. WTPI is owned and operated by Peoples Broadcasting and of the FM stations licensed to the city of Indianapolis, it's the only one that is locally owned, Edwards said. Perfect for indoors. Indoors, the Small Wonder is unobtrusive enough' to capture those spur-of-the-moment candid shots, without a lot of 'pre-production fuss" (optional power supply required).
