HOUSTON 9, CHICAGO 7 Ter ry Puhl's tie-breaking, two-run triple with two out in the eighth inning lifted the Houston Astros to a 9 7 victory over the host Chicago Cubs FROM WIRE SERVICES Cincinnati Reds Manager Russ Nixon says he, for one, is not surprised to see Darrell Porter on a rampage against National League pitchers.

"He did the same thing to us when we played them last week. Nixon said after watching Porter's four RBI performance key a 9 1 triumph Monday by the host St. Louis Cardinals. "He's an excellent, quality player. If they're going bad, they're going to come out of it." In the absence of Porter, who departed soon after batting in the seventh inning, St.

Louis Manager Whitey Herzog concurred with what Nixon had to say. "Darrell's been hitting the ball hard. The one thing I've been concerned about is that he stay aggressive," Herzog said. "Just so he keeps swinging." Porter, the catalyst for the Cards' attack, hammered a two run triple in the opening inning and belted a two-run homer in the third. The blows came in support of righthander John Stuper (6-2), who scattered nine hits and had little trouble conquering the Reds for a second time in six days.

"Sometimes it works to your advantage and sometimes it makes it tougher because it starts to work on your concentration," Stuper said of the backing he received. "They got a lot of hits, but when you put them together with no walks it really doesn't mean that much." Keith Hernandez added a double and triple, and Tommy Herr had three singles in St. Louis's 14 hit attack, while Porter, who started the day in a l-for-12 slump, walloped both his extra base hits off Reds righthander Ted Power (13), who lasted only 2V innings. A videotape of the incident was broadcast on WBBM's evening news. "I told him four or five times that I didn't want any cameras in my office." said Elia. "Then I pushed him. I did not slug him." "It wasn't professional on my part." said Elia. "but it wasn't profes LULU Elia's story sional on his part not to leave when I asked him to leave." Elia, who launched a tirade at Cub fans a month ago following a loss to the Los Angeles Dodgers, then met with Green.

A MONTH ago, Green refused to fire Elia after the manager's out burst against fans who booed the Cubs. After viewing videotape of Monday's incident. Green said, "I've heard both sides of the story and the incident is closed." "The whole incident has been blown out of proportion," said Elia.
