SHANE Mrs. Joaquin Miller, widow of California's famous poet, this week enters upon her eighty-fourth year in the home on "The Heights" where Joaquin Miller lived and worked.

Friends gathered to celebrate Mrs. Miller's birthday and enjoyed a picnic dinner under the eucalyptus trees planted by the pote years ago on what were formerly bare hills. Mrs. Miller recited several of her husband's poems George A. Kibbe, historian and wrtier, spoke on early days in California and the discovery of gold.

Present to greet Mrs. Miller were Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Jackson and sons, Miss Alida Schneider, Mrs. Hawley and Miss Lischen Hawley, all cousins of the poet; Dr.

Minora Kibbe, George A. Kibbe, Mrs. F. G. Harrison, Mr.

and Mrs. Wilson, Fred Rhoda. Gifts, cards and flowers were tendered to Mrs. Miller during the celebration. GREENUP.

This was revealed today by statistics of the bureau of census of the United States department of commerce as furnished the Berkeley Chamber of Commerce. The Berkeley chamber's figures show that the number of manufacturing establishments In Berkeley in 1931 were only seven per cent less than in 1929, whereas the nation at large reveals a decrease of 17 per cent and the State of California 16 per cent. Equally significant says President Robert E. Connolly of the Berkeley chamber. Is the fact that the total wages paid out by Berkeley manufacturers in 1931 was only 21 per cent less than In 1929 as compared with a 38 per cent drop nationally and a 22 per cent drop for California for the same three-year period.
