THURSDAY, DECEMBER 29, 1983 THE INDIANAPOLIS STAR- PACE i7 WTTV to air Liberty Bowl TV THURSDAY (Alt Pmfcrmwn l.ihtrd am t.mtrrn Stmndmrd Tim) (H) IViMn an Mmrk mnd 1 Notre Dame fans can give a cheer for Channel 4 which in an 11th tt hour decision will carry the Liberty Bowl football contest tonight. A rap on the knuckles is warrant-ed for the three commercial network stations in town which preferred to carry their holiday reruns rather J. than the football contest. They doomed ND fans to only three-quar- ters of the y. Because of its ironclad contract 'f, with Indiana University.

Channel 4 "V1, will carry the Hoosier Classic at 7 m. tonight and the Notre Dame-Boston College clash, joined in pro gress, at 9 p.m. (or when the IU. game ends). WTTV program director Mike Da vis doesn't think this will be too hard on ND fans since the" Liberty Bowl contest will not begin until some- where between 8:30 and 8 40 p.m.

jWith luck, only the kickoff and some 20 minutes of the game will not be seen here, David figures. Katz Sports, a division of Katz Communications is covering the event at Memphis via satellite for some 128 stations nationally, an estimated 83 to 84 percent of the country. Veteran sportscaster Curt Gowdy will do play by play. Bud Wilkinson, color; and Dave Diles, sideline coverage, a New York spokesman for Kalz said Wednesday. Originally, Davis had not planned on carrying the game because of the Indiana University commitment.

CBS wins again CBS won the National Nielsen ratings for the week ending Dec. 25 and continues as season winner to date. There were some surprises in the bottom of the week's list. Mac Davis' Christmas show was 61st and Barbra Streisand's "Funny Lady" was in 60th place. Two mid season replacements did not do particularly well on ABC TV.

"Automan" was in 38th place and "Masquerade" showed up in 54th position. The top 20 shows were: "Dallas," "Simon and Simon." "Dynasty," NFC. Monday Night Football. "A Gift of Love." "Magnum. PI." "ATeam," "Knot's Landing." "Falcon Crest." "Hotel," "Fall Guy." Bob Hope's Special.

Walt Disney Christmas Show. "Facts of Life." Cheers." "AfterMASH." "Hill Street Blues." "The Jeffersons." "Trapper John" and "The Scarecrow and Mrs. King" Miscellany Gary Burghoff. the former "Ra dar" on the "MASH" series, will make a guest appearance on "AfterMASH" in February. The newly merged Arts Entertainment Network on cable will be launched Feb.

Katz told him that other stations in the market were interested. (The Katz spokesman said Wednesday that the interest was never more than preliminary). Davis then heard both about the I.U.

availability and that no one else was planning to carry the bowl game in the city. "Wednesday I got a call from an irate viewer who seemed to think it was all my fault and Channel 4's fault that the game wouldn't be telecast here." Davis said, adding that after all Channel 4 is the sports station. At 9 a.m. Wednesday morning he contacted Katz and the company agreed to joined in progress cover age. "I'm glad to accomodate as many people as possible," Davis declared, adding that he was happy Katz ac cepted his offer.

Botte's fine Bette Davis is in good health and preparing to go back to work, her lawyer, Harold Schiff, told the New York Daily News. "We are waiting for a script from the producers of her series. he said. "Of course. Bette has the right to turn down the script if she doesn't like it." The veteran actress who plays the owner of the hotel in the hit ABC series suffered a mild stroke last spring after completing the first epi sode and has been forced to withdraw.
