i 2B- THE INDIANAPOLIS STAR SUNDAY, MAY 9, Crown group sizing up Pacers MSA? factory struck out oe Cooper 1 enough cash flow could be generated to keep the basketball owners off food stamps. Another more complicated, but not particularly far out premise would be for Lilly Endowment to purchase MSA and hand the operating contract to a local group. SO, ALL OF a sudden we have Crown Management in our midst joined by Cooper, who is a shrewd, experienced sports promoter. Ergo, eureka and all that Something is about to happen; feel it in my bones. For the next installment of this conjecture wrapped in an enigma with a whipped riddle topping consult your local gypsy.

Cooper is joining. It's called Crown Management And it's so new it hasnt yet been unwrapped. But in my Byzantine mind it's pulling together some strings. This is 145 percent conjecture, but give a listen, anyway. A local group has been sizing up the Pacers and Market Square Arena.

I've heard that Ted Boehm, who will be involved in Crown, and Dave Frick are among the interested parties. At least one man extremely knowledgeable about the basketball operation here has a theory on how the deal could fly. A group could purchase the Pacers, then get an operating contract for MSA and the new domed stadium. This way, presumably. in his career, he would be interested in anything other than caretaker duties until a successor to Cooper is found.

I'm betting there will be a new president in the chair when the gates open next year. Cooper's resignation should have no effect on the running of the 1982 500 Mile Race. All indications are that the ship is in top shape, record ticket sales, all cosmetic changes for this year's show completed. THE UNITED STATES Auto Club took charge when the track opened Saturday. The daily operation is in the sure hands of Tom Binford.

Binford already has proven he knows how to run the joint and start a that something funny was going on. WITHIN 48 HOURS, though, there will be plenty of stories circulating most of them imaginative and all probably a few miles removed from the truth. At the moment only one thing seems certain that this changing of the guard will be brief. Joe Cloutier, 74, is returning to the position he handed over to Cooper, Oct 17, 1979. Cloutier is a wise old gent who plays it close to the vest Ask him a pertinent personal question and you not only won't get a straight answer, you'll walk away trying to remember the question.

But I don't think that at this stage THE INDIANAPOLIS MOTOR Speedway is 500 acres of rumors. And most of them travel faster than an electronically guided boomerang. Throw one out, duck and deny it. It will return to you in record time and in no recognizable form. It's the oie place in the world where everyone is an insider and hardly anyone knows anything.

But all the lads went down with their bats on their shoulders. Announcement of John Cooper's resignation as president was so swift and startling I couldn't find a single person Saturday who had recovered enough to allow that he has been suspicious Entry List Hulman 100 race captured by Hood 3 Ncft ysft Rick Hood looses his right Indiana State Fairgrounds. Hood Hundred. (Star photo by D. Todd Speedway By ROBIN MILLER Ricky Hood wasn't planning on running in Saturday night's Hulman Hundred at the Indiana State Fairgrounds.

But when Eldora promoter Earl Baltes rescheduled a World of Outlaw sprint show for May 89, it meant Doug Wolfgang would have to be in Rossburg, Ohio to protect his WOO point lead. That left Bill King without a driver for the third United States Auto Club dirt race of 1982, but he wisely opted for Hood. THE PERSONABLE young man from Tennessee showed why he may be one of this country's most underrated, open-wheeled chauffeurs as he whipped USAC's best before a small turnout estimated at 6,000 people. In scoring his initial USAC victory, Hood handled Gary Bettenhausen, Kenny Schrader and Jack Hewitt in the 60-lap main event over the Fairgrounds' mile. Starting fourth in the 24 car field, Ricky stalked Schrader relentlessly for the first 39 laps until finally shoving Gary Stanton's factory car into the lead on Lap 40.

Hood, Stanton's full-time driver in the outlaw sprint ranks, never relinquished the top spot during the final 20 circuits, beating polesitter Bettehau-sen to the checkered flag by some 100 yards. Schrader, who started on the outside of the front row, appeared to have Jarrett triumphs Solihull, England (AP) Andrew "Jarrett upset his British Davis Cup teammate Jonathan Smith, 6 3, 61, -Saturday to take the men's singles title at the $50,000 LTA Satellite Tennis Tournament. Strike Continued From Page IB the (financial record) books." A second thought to an individual team's woes seems irrelevant to Fleisher. "The scapegoat always is players' salaries, but the fact teams like Denver, New Jersey, Indiana and San Antonio paid astronomical fees to get into the NBA is never mentioned," he said.

"They've been in an economic straightjacket since they entered the league. That's something the other teams didn't have to face. "If the Nets gave the (New York) Knicks $5 million, let the Knicks give it back to them." Something like that however, will have to be straightened out among the owners. And at this point "each individual owner and general manager has different opinions of what crucial issues are," Salyers said. Their game plan, he expects, will be formulated at the June 20 23 NBA Board of Governors meeting at Coronado, Calif.

To which Fleisher counters, "I've been in this business since 1962 and I've been hearing there would be less teams in the league ever since. Then there were eight teams, now there are 23. I'm not going to let a claim of financial trouble ruin the collective bargaining agreement." Prepare for Pro Sports War III. APPOINTMENT 095 Continued From Page IB Wysard Racing Team MarchCos-worth at 184.7. Howdy Holmes was at 183.9 in the Domino's Pizza March. Lazier's speed came easily. "If the team had wanted a 190, it was there," he said. "This is a 200 mph car.

But I was taking it pretty easy because I haven't driven that much lately." There were a couple of minor incidents. Pete Halsmer, who finished second to Gary Bettenhausen in the race to be first onto the track, had the rear coachwork fly off the Colonial Bread-WISH Arciero Eagleturbo Chevy going down the backstretch. There was no explanation for the problem that pretty well made history of some Fi-breglas. IN THE ONLY other problem, Vern Schuppan came into the pits with a minor fire in the turbocharger housing on his Kraco Car Stereo PC 9. It took less than the full contents of a five-pound extinguisher to put out the blaze.

Action should pick up today with who applied to take a driver's test this year it only seemed that way. Rejected because USAC had no information on his racing experience was Tom Grunnah, who was assigned to the Larlin Racing Penske PC 9. Stuart-Skillman Oldsmobile at 8424 U.S. 31 South has scheduled an autograph party with a dozen drivers, including Johnny Rutherford, Rick Mears and Al Unser, for 7 to 10 p.m. Monday.

There's an excellent chance all of them will show up, too. The dealership is giving them all free Cutlasses for the month. Veteran mechanic Jud Phillips is on hand again but without a car to prepare for the first time in 31 years. The easy going Californian says, "I may help somebody out, but I'm strictly free help because I don't want to have to get up early." handling problems in the late going and dropped back to third. The night's biggest charge came from Hewitt who stormed from 19th to take fourth.

HOOD'S EVENING almost got off to a disastrous start when his right rear wheel came off during hot laps. "We broke a couple of drive pins and that let the wheel come off," explained Hood, whose smooth style resembles his former tutor, Bubby Jones. "But luckily we didn't hit anything and other than a vibration midway through the race the car handled super." It was the second -straight year King's car won the Hulman show as Steve Kinser triumphed in 1981. Hood was asked if he'd be back for the Hoosier Hundred in September. "I'd love to, but remember it's Doug's ride," he answered, breaking into a grin.

"But maybe there'll be a World of Outlaw race that day." Cheryl Glass, the 20 year-old black female driver making her USAC debut managed to make the main event after finishing 10th (she was the last car running) in the first 15 lap qualifying heat. She dropped out of the feature with mechanical problems. Warlaumont stars STAR STATE REPORT Muncie, Ind. Sophomore fullback Mark Warlaumont sandwiched a pair of one-yard touchdown runs around a 47-yard field goal by Dane Fellmeth in the second quarter to propel the Cardinal team to a 24-14 victory Saturday in Ball State's spring football game. Sophomore tailback Kerry Murphy added an insurance TD against the Whites in the fourth quarter, after freshman Tom Canarecci recovered a fumble at the 11-yard line.

The losing White squad also scored in the second period on a 5 yard run by sophomore Terry Lymon, the game's top rusher with 156 yards in 27 carries. Neil Britt and Frank Kurth clicked on a 67-yard touchdown pass in the third period to account for the other White tally. PIT PASS By The Star Speedway Staff late withdrawal from the first-out derby got away several seconds after Bettenhausen and several seconds ahead of the Armstrong car. Bettenhausen cut a fairly rapid pace 82.350 mph for the ceremonial first circuit. Some first laps in recent years have been below 60 mph.

"I had to go that fast," said Gary B. "Halsmer was trying to beat me to the starting line. He went by me on the backstretch. I let him stay there until we got back around front, then I gave it a little kick of boost and went back around him." The maiden lap and the one following it to get him back to the pits were the only ones Bettenhausen made." It won't be announced until Monday, but the penalty for passing cars coming out of the pits on the yellow has been increased from one lap to two this year. There have been a couple more driver changes.

Bill Vukovich has moved from the Rattlesnake Racing Team's March copy to Kraco Car Stereo's Penske PC 9B, replacing Dick Ferguson. Steve Chassey, who quit the Jet Engineering team last month, now also has left the PWS Duke-Cosworth to take Vuky's spot with Rattlesnake. Cars will 'get only two warmup laps before they have to take the green flag instead of the three that had been allowed for as long as anybody can remember.

The huge entry list as many as 82 of the 109 are considered real, for-ure race cars is the reason for splitting the practice period. Without the division, the potential for too much congestion on the track is obvious. The warmup laps were reduced to allow more time for qualifying.
