And, as a response to the fire problems which plagued last year's race. Speedway electrician Joe Laurenzana installs grounds for new permanent fire fighting equipment. (Star Photos) Speedway spruce up Clean up work and repairs have been under way at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway in recent days in preparation for next Saturday's official opening. At left. Speedway employees James Strong and John Moore apply new concrete to 1979).

But Speedway superintendent Charlie Wysard Racing Continued From Page ID to name a few. Foyt, who was seriously injured last July at Michigan, is sulking his fifth Indy triumph and this will be his initial, open wheeled appearance of 81 BOBBY A three-time Indy winner along with brother Al and Johnny Rutherford, quit Roger Penske and fulltime driving to manage Josele Garza's team. The 47 year-old veteran is entered in one of Garza's Marches, but still isn't saying whether he'll run. Penske, the most successful owner in terms of races won, cars sold and money made the past few years, employs this year's favorite. Rick Mears, the 79 victor who was burned last May in a pit fire, has been unbeatable lately.

The two time CART champion won six of the last nine CART shows including this year's opener at Phoenix and Saturday's Atlanta race. His PC 10, designed by Geoff Ferris, has broken two track records (Phoenix and Atlanta) already and looks to have a decided advantage coming here. Kevin Cogan. the talented Californian who replaced Unser. also wheels a PC 10 and Penske has another one entered with no driver as yet However, Penske's PC 7s and PC 9s are the second most popular cars as Bill AIsup, Vern Schuppan, Tom Bigelow, Jim McElreath, Dick Ferguson and Roger Mears are ticketed for them.

DAN GURNEVS Eagle, put on the front row by Mike Mosley last May, will also be in abundance with Herm Johnson, Chip Mead, Pete Halsmer, Dennis Firestone, Mike Chandler and Mosley slated to drive them. Andretti, who quit his Formula One career to run Indy cars fulltime, is in one of Pat Patrick's new Wildcats, as is 73 winner Gordon Johncock. Rutherford is in his third season with Jim Hall's Chaparral, while the other Indy winner, Al Unser. makes his third straight Speedway appearance with Longhorn Racing. The returning former winners Foyt, Rutherford, Johncock, Andretti and the Unsers have won 16 of the last 21 Indy shows.

This year's newcomers are a diversified group, led by Desire Wilson. Mrs. Wilson, a South African living in London, is the only woman to ever win a Formula One race and will try to become the second female to make the Indy field in Teddy Yip's Eagle. MEXICO'S HECTOR Rebaque, ninth in the 1981 Grand Prix standings, is trying his hand at left-hand turns and will team with defending Can-Am champ, Danny Sullivan. Both have new Marches.

Bobby Rahal, another road racing toughie, also has a March, while World of Outlaw sprint standout Sammy Swindell is in an Eagle and three-time USAC champ Rich Vogler is driving for A.J. Watson. Most of the burn victims then had to walk all the way to the infield hospital for treatment.

It was an ugly scene that could have spread to the grandstands and turned into a holocaust. IN ORDER TO avert, or at least contain, a replay of the near tragedy, the Speedway has revamped the pit area. The height of the wall along the pits has been raised to 30 inches (it used to be 24), a curb between the pits and spectators has been built and a water line with an outlet at every pit has been installed. Also, new shutoff valves and refueling systems have been made mandatory and all pit personnel must wear fireproof clothing. Sneva's IMS record of 203.620 miles an hour will be challenged during qualifying May 15-16 and 22-23.

Admission for daily practice sessions is still $1 and admission to time trials is $5. RM. Thompson says he thinks everyone will have a garage. "Gasoline Alley can accommodate 80 cars and I think we've got everybody with a car and driver in one." said Thompson. "At least I hope so." The English-built Cosworth 8 is the predominant powerplant and will again be allowed 48 inches of manifold pressure, while the four-cylinder Offenhausers (there are only five entered) have been increased to 60 inches of boost.

ORIGINALLY, this race was to be run with all normally aspirated engines, but that plan was scrapped. Still, 16 entries are utilizing Chevrolet power. Besides the scoring snafu, the '81 race also had a near-disaster during Mears' fire. When the methanol ignited Mears and members of his crew, the firemen stationed in the pits stood helplessly by or ran. They had no fireproof clothing and the chemical in their extinguishers was pretty much useless.

Ga. For the 12th straight year, there will be a Pocono 500. But for the first time, it won't be sanctioned by the United States Auto Club. Prior to Saturday's Stroh's 200, Championship Auto Racing Teams announced it had secured the last link with east coast race fans for Aug. 15.

"We have signed an agreement to sanction and promote a 500 miler at Pocono for the next five years." said CART Chairman John Frasco. "We now have restored the triple crown (Indy, Michigan. Pocono) back to Indy-car racing." When CART broke away from USAC in 1979. Pocono was caught in the crossfire. All but one No Driver Naturally aspirated; all others turbocharged.

CART team boycotted Pocono that year and the management of the 2 Vi-mile tri-oval sued CART for S3 million in damages. An uneasy peace prevailed in 1980 and both sides participated, but then last June, USAC had to employ front engined dirt cars in order to fill the field. CART decided to forbid its members from competing (even though Tom Sneva and Dick Simon disobeyed) and Pocono added another two million to its suit. Frasco, a Michigan lawyer who was responsible for winning six CART teams way into the 79 500 through federal court, said all the litigation between Pocono and CART had been dismissed. Frasco also said that sponsor, television rights and purse announcements would be forthcoming.

Gilder, winner of two titles in seven years of PGA Tour activity, took advantage of another day of near-ideal scoring conditions to compile a course-record score of 199 for 54 holes. Curtis Strange, who had his second 65 of the tournament, moved into second at 202.

Phil Hancock and veteran George Archer were tied for third at 204. Hancock closed up with a 66. Archer, only one stroke back of Gilder when the day's play started, slipped to a 71. Continued From Page ID but no one was burned. Walther suffered a badly bruised leg.

ANDRETTI, NEARLY THREE mph slower than Mears in time trials, lost the engine in Pat Patrick's Wildcat on Lap 88 and Carter's Alex Foods March was sidelined with a punctured radiator. Unser, in the midst of a second place battle with Johncock, was KOd when his Longhorn Special caught fire during a fuel stop on lap 106. The three-time Indy winner suffered singed eyebrows. Even with the pit problems, there wasn't an accident or even a spin during the race and that's the first time that has happened since April 1979 here at AIR.
