Battle for columnist USAC revises rules and renews pacts The United States Auto Club's Board of Direc tors revised a few rules and renewed some contracts during their annual meeting here over the weekend. On the heels of last May's pit fire involving Rick Mears and subsequent fires during the CART season, USAC approved the following new refueling regulations: Mandatory use of one or the other of two vastly-improved refueling couplings. Requiring a positive shutoff valve which will shut off the fuel flow immediately. Setting rigid requirements for refueling supply hoses and vent hoses. MAKING FIRE-RESISTANT Nomex -type clothing mandatory for all pit personnel including scorers.

Requiring all pit crews to go through the refueling procedure in the USAC impound area. The other move involving Indy cars was to give the Drake Offenhauser and other four-cylinder turbocharged engines an increase in boost from 60 to 68 inches. Pony cars, such as Camaro, Firebirds, Mustangs, were banned from USAC's Center Line stock car series and older mid size models were approved. Cosworth-type engines of 120 inches were approved for USAC's national midget series, while the V-8, air-cooled motorcycle-type engine of 110 cubic inches was approved for the Regional Speedrome series only. USAC President Richard King and Roger McCluskey, director of competition, were given new five-year contracts, while Indianapolis businessman Robert Moorhead was elected chairman of the board replacing King, who resigned.
