Shakespeare, observed that "sweet are the uses of It's hard to picture the Bard wearing a Goodyear cap and sitting along the pit wall at Indianapolis. They'd probably call him "Billy." And, it would have been hard for any observer to "picture an Indianapolis 500 win-Tier who had to escape a cloud of -self-created smoke to win the j-ace.

Danny Sullivan's momentary adversity a cyclone of rubber would become far Isweeter 200 miles after he spun In the south short chute in last year's Indianapolis 500. His likeness now adorns the trophy, and, boy. does he have some story to tell. Remember the slow motion "Video? Seen it at a racing party or two In the last year? This was adversity. Indianapolis style: Sullivan dives low, all lour tires under the white line, to overtake Mario Andretti.

It is Lap 120. still 200 miles from the finish. In the short chute, courage gives way to panic as Sullivan's car spins out of control. Spectators rise in curiosity and horror. i Andretti squeezes past after momentary blindness in the smoke.

And, Sullivan's car stops, untouched, blessedly, the engine still running. His tires are hobbled, but he is pointed toward the second turn unscathed. In that instant. Sullivan Is the soldier who sees his enemy squeeze the trigger, the bullet bearing his name hurtling toward him. He closes his eyes to bow out and opens them to find surprised, stunned, and overjoyed that the bullet has missed.

Lucky break, of course. Sullivan had erred in his lap count. He thought he was only 12 laps from the finish before attempting to overtake Andretti. Fifty miles down the road. Sullivan dived low again and overtook Mario without the aerobatics.

He never relinquished the lead, beating the veteran to the finish 60 laps later by 1lh seconds. Freak occurrences or controversy did not dominate this 20th Indy start for him: he conceded, with sorrow and frustration, that better equipment nosed him out. Crowd favorite A.J. Foyt left the race with characteristic fury.

The car was pushln'. pushln'." said Foyt, and when he attempted some repairs In the pit, a fuel leak started a fire. A.J. wound up attempting to douse flames on a car which had finished Its race. But the 69th running of the Indianapolis 500 will be recalled as Danny Sullivan's hour of heroics and good fortune.

Driving for Roger Penskc, the ex-New York cabbie and dashing Jet-setter of the racing circuit found glory in his third Indy start. He merely had to survive high speed adversity to claim a sweet victory. Jim Garner steers the pace car. Thirty-three cars pull away and take the green flag. But it was a short day for the poicsltter.

Pancho Carter's car failing the endurance test by a long shot expired on the sixth lap. He finished 33rd. Scott Drayton's car lasted only a little longer as he finished 30th. The Buick engines were moved to garages for autopsies and pathology reports. On the race course.

Mario Andretti was speeding along, sharing the lead with the likes of Emerson Fittipaldi and Bobby Rahal. Rahal, starting on the outside of the first row. Jumped into the lead at the start, but exited short of the halfway point with engine problems. In all. Mario led 107 laps.

For him. the lead came at the wrong time. Race Day K5 ligures were tairiy tame otherwise: Average Jspeed was 152.982. attributable to 77 minutes of yellow flag 'time. A few accidents without 'serious injury occurred, the most spectacular involving Rich Vo--gler. Howdy Holmes, and Tom ISneva. Roberto Guerrero finished in place, the lone other driver to complete 200 laps.

Al Unser. drove a competitive race and finished fourth, frustrated by a 'one-lap penalty for driving over an air hose during a pit stop. The assessment kept him off the space lap. Veteran Johnny Ruth-Vrford sped past the field from the 30th starting spot to enter "the Top Ten 30 laps Into the race. He pulled the car into Gas-'oline Alley with a fifth place finish.

I It had been another high speed month of May. On the first ilay of qualifying, 27 cars made Jhe field on a sunny, delightful ynorningafternoon. Tom Carne-iie enjoyed another "new track record" pronouncement, and then another, and another. Scott Hrayton opened the festivities, driving his Buick-engine powered car to both single-lap and four-lap average records. Pancho Carter, powered by similar equipment, set the four-lap record and earned the pole position with 212.583 average.

The pair of ESuick engines on One made a prime story after qualifications concluded. The lone question remaining "was the endurance of the engine in a field long since dominated hy Cosworth engines. Mario Andretti. who had reworded 214-plus laps in practice, settled for only a 21 1.576 speed on qualifying day. He was somber and frustrated by that verdict In all.

six former winners made the field. Another. Gordon Jtahncock, announced his retire-ifient on the eve of time trials. And. a future winner, young Sullivan from Louisville, quietly qualified for a third row spot In the last hour of that first Saturday.
