Once there, Villeneuve will be a rookie in name only since he has 19 Championship Auto Racing Teams starts with one victory. The final rookie in the field is also a deserving starter and by the time the 1 1 a.m. green flag drops could become the crowd's sentimental favorite.

Phil Krueger. a 34-year-old resident of Indianapolis, made the field in ways by qualifying a year-old machine, the only 1985 model on the starting grid. In addition Krueger. who qualified his Moran Electric MarchCosworth at 207.948. has been coming to the Speedway since 1981 but had never made it.

being slowed by brushes with the wall and a slow ride last May. But he persevered. Just as Lanier, Moreno and Villeneuve did. mm (LE)(SG ESDKKS5 DEALER PRICES year than I would have done last year." Roberto Moreno, rookie No. 2 in the field, didn't have quite as difficult a time as Lanier, but he was asked to stay below 200 miles an hour during his rookie test.

The reason was pretty clear-cut Indianapolis was Moreno's second oval test. The 27-year-old from Brazil came up through the Formula Ford and Formula Atlantic series before getting on the Indy-car circuit for road races last season. His credentials, enhanced with a fifth-place finish at Miami, were sound for the twists and turns of the road courses. But the ovals, simple looking to the outside observer, are much more difficult to the participant on the inside of a cockpit. "I have built up to speed slowly because you have to adjust as a driver to the high speeds," said Moreno, whose only other oval race was earlier this year at Phoenix, where he finished 20th.

"After the first race, I have some confidence. I'm beginning to feel at home here." That's obvious. Moreno qualified his No. 9 Galles LolaCos-worth at 209.469, good for the outside of the fifth row. In the next spot, the inside of the sixth row.

is 30-year-old Canadian Jacques Villeneuve, whose hard luck has mostly been against the hard wall of the Speedway. Villeneuve qualified here In 1984 but never made it to Race Day because he crashed his car in practice, suffering head Injuries that kept him from racing. Then last May. he had two accidents and yielded his ride to Johnny Parsons. Finally, it appears he will get his first Indy start after qualifying his Living WellHemelgarn MarchCos- The four rookies in this year's Indianapolis 500 are easy to pick out of a crowd.

They're the ones having chased away headaches and replaced them with smiles. Making the race can do that for a guy. For Randy Lanier, Roberto Moreno, Jacques Villeneuve and Phil Krueger, the headaches had come from banging their heads against the wall in frustration while trying to make the race. The smiles, obviously, come from finally having done it. The one common bond, aside from their first-year status, that these four will share when they take the green flag Sunday morning.

Is that all have suffered setbacks in trying to make the field of 33. Obviously, qualifying at Indy isn't easy and for some It becomes downright hard. Take, for a first example, the fastest rookie. Randy Lanier. He came to the Indianapolis Motor Speedway last year but was politely told by United States Auto Club officials to come back after he got more experience.

So he did. came back this year and didn't pass his rookie test after veteran drivers observing in the corners noticed his speed and his line weren't consistent. But Lanier went back out and under the observers' watchful eyes, passed the test. And on the first day of qualifying, he passed over the 212-mile oval at a 209.964 average in his Arciero Racing MarchCosworth. earning him a spot on the inside of the fifth row.

"I was very disappointed last year," said the 31 -year-old Davie. resident. "But I've logged quite a few laps since then. I felt I could have qualified (last year). I'll do a better job this Reis-Nichols, Inc.
