13 Bonus episode of acclaimed new series 'Shannon's Deat'l calls action in new film No, he didn't meet Tom Cruise. For that matter. Bob Jenkins, the voice of the "500" on the Speedway Radio Network, Isn't looking for a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame Just yet for his role in Days of Thunder. Cruise's stock car racing movie is scheduled to hit theaters nationally on June 8. "I really don't know if I'll even be in the movie at this point," Jenkins said last week.

"When Tom Cruise failed to win an Oscar (for Born on the Fourth of July, the budget of this film was reduced drastically. My in- Steve Hall volvement may not be much in the finished film." Jenkins plays himself, providing voice-over coverage for some of the races. "If they hold to the script, after a mix of opening shots and black and white stills, I'd be the first person the audience sees," he said. "I say, 'Welcome to Day-tona and nine straight days Of thunder." Hey, that's where the title comes from. Being in a movie "was a pretty easy assignment," he continued.

"It really was no different from doing a normal standup for the TV program." He means standing up, facing the camera and talking into a microphone for ESPN's Speed-week, for which Jenkins works. (The Lingner Group Production Inc. makes Speedweek here in town: Jenkins tapes his in-stu-dlo stuff at WXIN. Channel 59.) ESPN's race coverage is very much a part of Days of Thunder. "They're trying hard to make it as accurate as possible." Except in maybe one area the names.

"The drivers' names are kinda strange," Jenkins allowed. "Rowdy Burns, Cole Trickle." Cole Trickle? Sounds like something you'd have in a mine. 'Shannon's Deal' In any other lawyer drama, a show about dockworkers cheated out of their pensions would end up in court, with the show's hero successfully persuading a Judge or jury that they had been wronged. Today's Shannon's Deal at 10 p.m. on WTHR (Channel 13) deals with the cheated dock-workers, but doesn't end up in court.

In fact, the show closes where the average drama would probably begin with the filing of the lawsuit. Obviously, Shannon's Deal Is no average lawyer drama. I like it a lot, although not as much as most of the nation's TV critics, who have been positively doing handsprings over It. Could it be they're suffering from movie-itls? That's the belief that if someone normally known for big screen projects deigns to grace us with his presence on the small screen, the project must be very, very special. Ergo, Shannon 's Deal creator John Sayles is mainly known for movies Eight Men Out, for example so this TV show must be a knockout.

(This would explain some of the hype about Blue Velvet director David Lynch's Twin Peaks, although much of that praise is well-deserved.) I take the view that TV has nothing to apologize for. It's more likely to broach adventurous and controversial subjects and take stylistic leaps than the movies. Heck, the fact that ABC has a weekly series Imprinted with Lynch's surreal vision should tell you something about the medium's willingness to try new (and odd) things. Viewed with a more impartial eye. Shannon 's Deal Is not manna from a movie maven.

Instead, it's an Intelligent character study that sometimes plays like a Rockford Files for the '90s, with Jamey Sheridan as a down-on-his-luck lawyer still struggling with his private demons. In today's episode, Jack Shannon must confront his alcoholic father (Ralph Waite of The Waltons and the gambling habit that destroyed Jack's life. Is It worth your time? Yes. Is It the greatest thing since someone figured out to put moving pictures In a box? Nope. Dice-y move? Andrew Dice Clay's raw humor may have gotten the sneering comic banned from MTV, but It's apparently OK for NBC.

He'll host this week's Saturday Night Like, with Sinead' O'Connor as musical guest. tAy 9:30 P.M. Brewster Place. Mattie and Etta Mae (Winfrey and Brenda Pressley) open their LaScala Restaurant, and like any sitcom worth its writers there are the standard problems: the freezer breaks down, the short-order cook is short-tempered, little reluctant to pursue the powerful suspect responsible for the murder of the sister of Council-woman DeLong (guest Denlse Nicholas).
