-SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 6, 198 -THE INDIANAPOLIS STAR- D-4- Carter back in saddle; Capels wants Andretti Michael Andretti holds off Al Jr. for Marlboro win ed the pits, Andretti made his move. "When Al came out ahead of me. I knew he would still have cold tires and would need to warm them up," Andretti explained. As the two left Turn 1.

Andretti regained a lead he would not relinquish although Unser tried and even got by for a short time only to be repassed. Coming up to lap Rick Mears and Raul Boesel. Unser tried to slip past Andretti by going low In Turn 9. Unser's car bobbled and then swapped ends before crunching the outside wall. "It was getting near the end of the race and I had to make a move whenever it came open," said Unser who was unhurt.

"Unfortunately, It came open In the fastest part of the track. I got out in the water and that was all she wrote." Although jubilant in capturing his first Indy-car race of the season. Andretti was sympathetic over Unser's misfortune. "It's a shame the race had to end that way because I think we might have crossed the line side by side," Andretti pointed out. "I think we both deserved to finish one-two regardless of who finished first." Fittipaldi.

who had more problems with his car in the wet, was a relieved runner-up. By RICK SHAFFER STAR STAFF WRITER Miami, Fla. With the 1988 CART Indy-car season closing with today's Nissan Indy Challenge, a lot of pit row talk centered on the upcoming season. CART itself ended a lot of the speculation concerning the '89 schedule by unveiling it Friday and including new races in Japan and Detroit. Concerning team and driver changes next year, most of the surprise came prior to the Mid-Ohio race when it was announced that Bobby Rahal would be ending his association with TrueSports and drive for Kraco Racing.

Kraco's current driver. Michael Andretti. was announced as teammate to his father, Mario, for the Newman-Haas team last week. A survey of teams practicing for the Miami race did reveal a pair of surprises and there will be some changes for 1989. Perhaps the biggest surprise came with Vince GranatelU's admission his team would be using Buick power for the ENTIRE season.

Because of boost limitations in CART regulations, the Buick is only supposed to be competitive at Indianapolis, where USAC rules give the powerplant a chance. "We are developing a Buick for the whole season." Granatelll don't know if we'll be competitive. We probably won't, but we don't have many choices." Granatelll. who confirmed that Roberto Guerrero would return next year along with sponsor STP, was undecided on chassis. Pancho Carter will also be returning to full-time Indy-car racing as Hardees sponsorship will put him in the cockpit of the Leader Cards entry.

Current Leader Cards driver Randy Lewis confirmed he would be driving for someone else next Carter J. Andretti year, but was not ready to reveal the team he would drive for. John Andretti, who lost his ride when Curb Racing fell by the wayside, appears to be In line for the Morales Autosports ride currently occupied by Howdy Holmes. "John Andretti and I are working hard to procure sponsorship so we can be together for the next three years." said team manager and chief mechanic John Capels. Capels' soon-to-be former driver Howdy Holmes said he is "talking to several people." "But I can tell you who I won't be driving for." Holmes added In what is a less than amicable parting.

Legendary four-time Indy 500 winner A.J. Foyt will be back, but apparently only for Indianapolis. "I'll probably run one car in Indianapolis," Foyt said. "We might possibly have two cars but I really don't know right now to be truthful. "It's gotten so costly to race.

The way the CART rules are now, you can only run with a Chevy and you can't buy one." added Foyt. who ironically owns a Chevy dealership in Houston. Hemelgarn Racing will have Ludwig Heimrath with MacKen-zie sponsorship and possibly a second car at selected races. Scott Drayton, who is Hemel-garn's other driver, was announced as a second driver for Dick Simon Racing with Amway again sponsoring him. That deal is for eight races, but could grow to the full 16 with additional sponsorship money.

This announcement contradicted an earlier one that had Arie Luyendyk as the only Simon driver in '89. Andy Kenopensky said his Machinist Union team would turn with one car for 1989. "We're going to run one car and we're talking to Kevin (Co-gan) about driving," Kenopensky said. Regarding chassis, Kenopensky said he was undecided but added that no one has purchased a March yet, but 33 Lolas had already been purchased by other owners. Machinists is also reported to be in line for a 1988 Penske.

Already purchasing this year's Penske is Arciero Racing which will replace John Jones with Didier Theys. WRTV-Channel 6) Nissan Indy Challenge with the time he set during Friday qualifying. Sullivan established a new track record of 1 16.639 miles an hour (55.062 seconds) in the Miller High Life Penske-Chevy.

FILE PHOTO Michael Andretti Mario Andretti will start second in the Amoco-K-Mart Lola-Chevy with a speed also set on Friday but the remainder of the top 10 was jumbled in Saturday's timed session. Michael Andretti will start third in the Kraco Lola-Cosworth followed by Mears in the Penn-zoil Penske-Chevy and Unser Jr. in the Team Valvoline March-Chevy. Rounding out the top 10 are Fittipaldi In the Marlboro Lola-Chevy. Teo Fabi in the guaker State March-Porsche, Boesel in the Domino's Lola-Cosworth.

Bobby Rahal In the Budwelser-TrueSports Lola-Judd and Derek Daly in the Raynor Lola-Cosworth. FOUR MEN were elected to the CART Board of Directors, it was announced Saturday. They are: guaker State Porsche team manager Derrick Walker, car owners Maurice Kraines and Rick Galles and John Capels, chief mechanic and team manager of Alex Morales Autosports. 0 OLUB SETS Introducing The All-New 1989 By RICK SHAFFER STAR STAFF WRITER Miami, Fla. They called it the Marlboro Challenge and it proved to be aptly named.

A pair of rainstorms made it a challenge just getting the race started, but the hour-and-a-half delay was worth the wait as Michael Andretti held off Al Unser Jr. and then Emerson Fittipaldi Saturday to win the rich exhibition race at Tamiami Park. Andretti. who put a Cos-worth-powered car in the victory circle for the first time this season, staged a thrilling 21' -lap battle for the lead which culminated when Unser spun and tagged the wall in the last turn of the last lap. The driver of the Kraco Lola-Cosworth then held off an oncoming Fittipaldi to take the $225,000 first prize by a margin of 2.45 seconds.

Raul Boesel was an unofficial third. "The car performed perfectly," said Andretti, whose father Mario led Laps 2 through 9 before spinning out of contention. "In the beginning, my visor fogged up and 1 couldn't see anything in front of me." Still, that didn't keep the younger Andretti from moving up from sixth starting spot to third by the 10th lap. He dispatched pole-sitter Danny Sullivan for second on Lap 1 7 and set off after Unser in the Team Valvoline March-Chevy. From Lap 20 on.

the two staged a battle for first not often seen in races with points counting toward the CART championship. Andretti closed on Unser's tail and then swept past in Turn 4 to lead Laps 21-30. He pitted on Lap 30 for slicks and Unser inherited the lead by staying out three extra circuits. Oddly enough, the switch to slicks proved to be the undoing for Sullivan who slid straight forward in Turn 5 and tapped the barrier head-on in the Miller High Life Penske-Chevy. As Unser.
