J. Vernon McGee, who taught the Thru the Bible radio series on more than 600 stations in the United States and Canada during a 55-year ministry, died of heart failure at 84, ministry officials said. Rev. McGee died Thursday in a nursing home in the central California town of Templeton, near his daughter's home, officials of the Thru the Bible Radio Network ministry said Saturday. Rev.

McGee was the pastor of the downtown Los Angeles Church of the Open Door, famed for its rooftop neon "Jesus Saves" sign, for 21 years until 1970 when he gave up his pulpit to lecture at Bible conferences nationwide and to continue as president of the Thru the Bible Radio Network. A native of Hillsboro, Texas, Rev. McGee left his bank teller job to pursue a bachelor of arts degree from Southwest University in Memphis, now Rhodes College. He also earned a bachelor of divinity degree from the Columbia Theological Seminary and master and doctor of theology degrees from the Dallas Theological Seminary. He was ordained a Presbyterian minister in 1933.

Rev. McGee was a pastor of churches in Georgia, Tennessee and Texas before moving to Los Angeles in 1941. He began his radio ministries with occasional broadcasts in the 1930s and later with the weekly The Open Bible Hour program at a Pasadena station in 1941. His broadcasts were expanded to a daily half-hour show in 1949 called The High NoonBible Broadcast. The Thru the Bible weekday broadcast first aired in 1967 and had expanded more than 600 radio stations in the United States to, and Canada.

It was also broadcast overseas. Rev. McGee wrote more than 100 books on Bible subjects. In 1981, he received the Distinguished Service Award from the National Religious Broadcasters. Rev.

McGee is survived by his wife, Ruth McGee: a daughter; and two grandsons. A private graveside service will be Monday.
