A controversial BDC documentary by writernarrator Edward Behr takes the latter view, suggesting that Hirohito assumed' different characters during his life to assure his survival young, god-like ruler, aggressive war leader on a white stallion and a beneficent, grandfather figure to his country in his later years. The 90-minute Hirohito: Behind the Myth airs at 10 p.m.

today on WFYI (Channel 20). Behr sets out to prove that Hirohito, who died this year, was "neither the puppet nor the pacifist that his image builders have made him out to be." He finds convincing evidence in the diaries kept by Hirohito's advisers and' interviews with those who knew him. The profile that emerges is of a Hirohito who encouraged his country's military aggression In Manchuria as a means of quieting miliary unrest at home, and who helped dupe U.S. officials into a state of unreadiness before the Pearl Harbor attack. Hirohito escaped trial for war crimes only because U.S.

officials felt Japan would "disintegrate" If anything happened to the emperor, says a former CBS News reporter. Consequently, President Har- ry fruman ordered Geh Douglas MafArthur, Japan's occupation commander, to conduct a public: relations campaign to "popularize "and humanize the emperor to-his people." The well-meaning1 coverup kept Japan intact but obscured Hirohito's true role In World War II. Vi The good news The makers of The Golden Girls have come up with another winner, an amusing new comedy about a farm family. Heartland. It premieres at 8:30 p.m.

Monday on WISH (Channel 8). Brian Keith stars as a likable bigot forced to move in with his daughter's family when his farm goes belly-up." The daughter (Kathleen Lay man) and her husband (Richard GiUiland), whom Keith's charac-ii i shows shown in black and white. (C) denotes a closed made in the log. captioned show. This log is published as a public service.

Stations sometimes make late revisions and The opener has a melodramatic setting a tornado arrives as the family hurries to get in a financially critical wheat crop but the cast easily harvests the humor, including a few Wizard of Oz Jokes that work despite obvious punchlines. The bad news The pilot for CBS' other new comedy premiering Monday. Live-In, recycles voyeuijistlc shower scene of the 1981 movie Porky's which means that Porky's was far more creatively inspired than thought or. more probably, that the makers of Live-In haven't an original funny idea in their heads. Live-In debuts at 8 p.m.

on Channel 8. In the show from Robert Ster-nin and Prudence Fraser, a young Australian nannyhousekeeper (Lisa Patrick) Is hired by a New Jersey couple to care for the baby when the wife goes back to work. The couple's teen son Danny (Chris Young) thinks gorgeous Lisa will fulfill his fantasies. Live-In is amazingly leering, considering the time slot. When Danny and friend Gator (Light-field Lewis) peer through a hole in the bathroom wall to see Llsa undressing for a Shower, the camera tightly focuses on the unbuttoning and unzipping.

There's a reference to "bopping" having sex and Lisa jokingly compares Danny's sex organ to a baby carrot. The wink wink, nudge nudge aspect of the show Is balanced by standard sitcom morality a towel ultimately prevents Danny and Gator from seeing Lisa and cliched sitcom characters (distracted dad, pesky younger brother, kooky neighbor). It's back The 1 l'A-hour saga. War and Remembrance, Part Two. re turns to ABC.
