13-19 Waterloo Bridge JkL 4m $3 0 Oft UNITED PRESS INTERNATIONAL Film crewperson moves to other side of camera 'Dangerous Games' Dangerous Games, Neder-lander Theater, New York City. Frank Rich, New York Times. If theater people want to make a spectacle of themselves on a Broadway stage, that is their inalienable right, but whatever happened to the poor audience's right to enjoy a few laughs In the face of such disaster? Dangerous Games, a new musical misfire at the Nederlander, extinguishes all opportunities for fun by shrouding its inanities in stern sermonettes on sexual politics, dour images from Greek mythology and real-life South American state terrorism. Mel Brooks notwithstanding, it's hard to have a hoot when the advancing chorus line consists of goose-stepping Black Shirts. The production was conceived, co-written, directed and choreographed by Graciela Dan-iele, an artisan of show-biz perki-ness who has folded simulated Bob Fosse struts into entertainments like Drood and The Pirates of Penzance.

All God's Dangers' All God's Dangers, Lamb's Theater, New York City. Frank Rich. New York Times. Of all American storytellers, few are more popular than those elderly men and women whose memories reach back into the ashes of the Old South. Few deserve that popularity more than the 84-year-old Alabama cotton farmer whose reminiscences were published in 1 974 under the title All God's Dangers: The Life of Nate Shaw.

What Theodore Rosengarten preserved on tape was a black witness to rural Southern history with incredible recall, hard-won wisdom and the verbal gifts of a Faulknerian storyteller. In the stage adaptation of All God's Dangers at the Lamb's Theater, Rosengarten and two collaborators. Michael Hadley and Jennifer Hadley, have boiled down Nate Shaw's recollections further, to the two-hour contours of a one-man show starring Clea-von Little. The result Is a conscientious. If often undramatic.

And Angela Lansbury proved that Gypsy would not die with Ethel Merman. No, Nureyev Is overwhelmed not by the ghost of Brynner but, rather, by the show Itself. He who plays the king must be the center of the entertainment, drawing everyone in it into his magnetic field.

Magnetism is lacking in Nureyev's king. And fire. And the ability to strike fear into the hearts of all those wives. With his broken English and querulous manner, Nureyev is no more prepossessing than some immigrant Soviet cabbie. Liz Robertson makes an engaging governess, whether facing up to the king and facing down to the small legion of his children, who are, as ever, adorable.

Most of the others in the cast acquit themselves respectably, but a King and I without a center Inevitably loses strength around the edge. Following are capsule reviews of recently opened plays on Broadway, off Broadway and elsewhere: 'Beside Herself Beside Herself, Circle Repertory'. New York City. Frank Rich, New York Times. The image that lingers from Joe Pintauro's new play, Beside Herself, is that of four women in white negligees, each representing the same heroine at a different age, as they comb out their hair and prepare for sleep.

The setting is a cozy house in the woods on an isolated island; the light is the dim glow of a harvest moon. While there Is nothing prurient about the scene, its appeal recalls the calendar art that was yesteryear's soft-core pornography. It's a tableau that can stand for the entire evening. While Pin-tauro is a serious writer with a sincere mission, his play apotheosizes women from afar while pretending to understand them from within. The crisis faced by the lonely present-day Mary (Lois Smith) has to do with a long-ago misbe gotten marriage.

Betrayed by the man she loved, she had instead married his lackluster brother. Now both men are dead, and the barren Mary, unfulfilled as a writer, schoolteacher, mother and wife, must decide whether life is worth living. Enter Augie-Jake (William Hurt), a UPS deliveryman much her junior. Mary thinks the gentleman caller is a double for the man she really loved. Augie-Jake, whose own troubled history is littered with betrayals, is looking for the mother he never really had.

Anyone need a road map? 'A Bronx Tale' A Bronx Tale, Playhouse 91, New York City. Mary Campbell, Associated Press. A Bronx Tale, written and acted by Chazz Palminteri. tells the story of a boy growing up with two father figures, one of them a mobster. It's an interesting large anecdote, stuffed full of small, fascinating, well-rounded anecdotes, containing both gritty unpleasantness and light humor plus some moral points.

The play, in which Palminteri takes a boy he calls Colognio from age 9 through adolescence, is at Playhouse 91 off Broadway. Palminteri, who also plays 17 other parts, has learned well the writer's lessons embroider on material you know and give your story a beginning, middle and end. His ending wraps up every thread in the story and Is lavishly sentimental and it works. Mark W. Travis, artistic director at Theater West in Hollywood, where the play opened last spring, directed.

Wow! Hollywood bigshots wanted to see me. "They asked me to read for the part of a prostitute in Mask, which was starring Cher. They didn't believe I could do it, so all the executives stood there on the stage while I read. "But I wasn't afraid. I just walked in there are started reading.

The next day I got the part. "When I reported for work I was intimidated. There was Cher and Eric Stoltz. As I played my scene, I told myself to be cool. After all, they chose me for the part, so I must be good at it.

I just reacted to what was going on and ad-libbed some stuff, and they kept it in the movie. It worked out. "Two days later I got a call to play the lead role in a TV After School Special called The Pilot. I played a girl who masquerades as a boy. After that I never worked again as a grip, but I still love and respect the grips and I spend time with them whenever I'm on a set acting." Since Mask, Minter has appeared In half a dozen movies, is co-starring in Popcorn and has worked In a score of TV shows.

The dismaying spectacle of a great artist making a monkey of himself is provided by Rudolf Nureyev in the touring production of The King and I that opened a two-week run Oct. 1 7 at the Playhouse Theater here. In the transition frftm dance to musical theater, the International ballet star has lost his fabled charisma. He has not the voice, the presence or the dramatic ability for the role of the domineering king of Siam in the Rodgers and Ham-merstein musical. Thrusting him before the public like this is an act of either profound stupidity or arrant cynicism.

It is no favor to the public that cherishes him for his distinguished career in dance. Nor is it a compliment to the people who buy tickets to anything with a celebrity In It, because even these trusting souls are entitled to a creditable effort. The problem Is not that the part "belonged" to Its creator, Yul Brynner, who played It on Broadway and In the film. Other actors have done it successfully, among them the same Michael Kermoyan who turns up in Wilmington as Nureyev's Siamese prime minister. The history of the musical stage is dotted with examples of performers who triumphed in roles thought to have been unplayable by any but the originals.

But, of course, the fun thing about long-shots is that they do come in. The anonymous army of stagehands has strong unions and they are paid well.

For the most part they are friendly, easy-goirig folk who enjoy the camaraderie of film companies. They just don't dream about stardom. But, then, there's always the exception. Kelly Jo Minter was typical of the behind-the-camera breed, content with her lot as a grip until providence interceded to make her an actress. Minter took time out the other day to talk about her good fortune.

"I never wanted to be an actress," she said in a voice crackling with energy and humor. "I was happy working with a bunch of guys who called themselves The Grips From Hell. We even worked on porno films. They treated me great. The toughest part of the job was trying to drink beer with them after work.

"I was a plasterer to begin with. My upper body is very strong. I was good at my Job. I could have been a journeyman, but it was a natural progression for me to become a grip. "One day I was working at Universal on a Mr.
