Newfoundland. Canada Turnablowout was fair play here Sunday afternoon.

Less than 24 hours after the i Indiana Pacers opened their pre-season with a 132109 victory over Denver, the Nuggets came right back with a 125-102 pounding of the Pacers. And it was an ugly pounding, considering two Denver starters, Michael Adams and Alex English, were basically bench decorations because of minor Injuries. English managed to get one minute at the end as the Memorial Stadium crowd of 2.704. un-' aware the All-Star forward had a muscle pull, loudly questioned Denver coach Doug Moe. maybe threatening him with bodily harm.

So much for the excitement. Back to the Pacers. With the exception of Vern Fleming's solid play for the second straight night (24 points) and winded LaSalle Thompson's 13 rebounds, there wasn't much to brag about. Unless game-long foul trouble (Thompson, Chuck Person. Rlk Smlts.

Detlef Schrempf). mediocre shooting turnovers (27), lack of good ball movement (12 assists, no one had more than two), or being beaten to every loose rebound and ball or never having the lead past the second quarter causes you to shout. "We all looked like we had a long night," said Pacers coach Dick Versace. "I'm not going to panic over anything. I learned a lot." Including the painful lesson that rookie George McCloud may have a long way to go as a point guard.

His two-night totals were 33 minutes, one for five from the floor, three boards, six assists, five turnovers, four points and a general look that shows he's tentative. "He's a nice kid. but we're Just not hooping it up on a playground In Daytona," said Versace. "This is the NBA and he's got to produce. He's got to get the ball up the floor, he's got to make entry passes, he's got to defend, he's got to run the court, he's got to understand you can't stand there and think no one will come up from behind and steal the ball.

"Right now. he's struggling. He's a rookie and he's getting attacked. Noboby really attacked him in practice. I Just think he doesn't realize how tenacious he has to be and that you have to be alert at all times." Versace inserted McClouc at the start of the second period and after six minutes had seen enough.

Mears assumed command with Al Unser Jr. in hot pursuit. Unser, who won Saturday's Marlboro Challenge, remained in second after the leaders their first pit stops on Lap 26. But the driver of the Valvoline LolaChevy took over the lead on Lap 50 during a caution period for Teo Fabi's accident. Fabi was knocked unconscious after his Quaker State MarchPorsche spun on Lap 48 and backed into the concrete.

Fabl was taken to Community Hospital in Monterey for tests after suffering a minor concussion and a compression fracture of the sixth cervical vertebrae. CART physician Dr. Steve Ol-vey said that Fabi was "slightly confused, but his vital signs were good and there was no evidence of a chest injury." The caution period lasted for seven laps and provided Mears an opportunity to make his final fuel stop, but it played a major role in Unser's chance to win. Although the Albuquerque, N.M.. chauffer built a seven-second lead over Mears, he stayed out on the track and was forced to make his final fuel stop on Lap 63.

That allowed Mears and Andretti to get past, but Unser was able to return in third place where he would stay. "We didn't feel as early as they (Mears and Andretti) pitted, the yellow was going to be as long as it was for them to go the distance," Unser explained. "It was a gamble. It worked against the guys who finished behind me, but it didn't work against these guys (Mears and Andretti)." Mears, who found himself out front by 10 seconds, pretty much maintained that margin until the final 10 laps, where he let up a bit. "The fuel wasn't too bad," Mears continued.

"The Chevy ran well all day and the only time I started backing off was the last 10 laps. And that was Just to make sure." Mears knew what was happening, but to the fans it appeared that Andretti, the 1969 Indy 500 winner, was reeling him in. Andretti began to cut into the margin by as much as a second a lap. He simply ran out of laps but made the finish the closest of the 1989 season. "So then I brought him back In when there was basically no decision, so now he can play with a little less pressure on him.

"He played a little better, but we're talking inching along here. Nov. 3 (the opener at Atlanta) is going to come pretty quick. And Versace wasn't done. "He's got a lot of talent, but he doesn't have a clue right now.

He spent the better part of three weeks before training camp shopping for furniture. He should have been busting it in the gym. He doesn't know what he's getting into, that's true for all rookies. "We'll get him minutes when we can. but I want to try to win basketball games and he'd better get himself ready through the preseason or it will be Rickey Green or Everette (Stephens) or somebody else who is the backup guard.

I want to play this guy, we've got a big Investment In him, but he has to understand we don't have forever." Said McCloud. "I'm not making any excuses. Today. I Just wasn't ready. I came off the bench cold, stiff, everybody else was loose and warmed up.

By the time I was warm, I made some mistakes. "I just need to pick up the NBA system. I know by the time the regular season starts. I'll be ready." That's what the Pacers are counting on. In the meantime, they will prepare for their next exhibition game Wednesday night at Fort Wayne against Dallas.
