After all, there had been a time when they might have wondered if their son would achieve anything. After one undistinguished year at the University of Kentucky, Danny had dropped out of college.

A short time later, he and a friend journeyed to New York City for a weekend. "I ended up staying for 2 years," Sullivan recalled. During that time, he drove a cab, waited tables, raised chickens and tried to grow grass the legal kind. "I wasn't thinking about my future in New York," said Sullivan. "I was just bumming around, having a good time from day to day, enjoying myself." Then, one day, a family friend.

Dr. Frank Falkner, arrived in New York, an emissary of his parents, who were hoping for greater things from their son. Falkner had helped introduce Jack Brabham's rear-engine Cooper Climax to the Speedway in the early '60s and still has many connections in Indy-car racing, including one Roger Penske. "If you ask my family and friends, they might say I knew I wanted to be a race driver when I was a kid, but I never really knew much about racing, or followed, or went to races, until Frank Falkner tried to get me back on right track," said Sullivan. "I was bumming around, doing odd jobs here and there, and Frank thought that wasn't the way for me to end up.

So he made a deal he'd send me to a driving school if I'd go back to a university. I haven't made it back yet and he's going to call that bet in one of these days and you'll see me in college." In the interim, however, Sullivan went to racing's school of hard knocks overseas, learning to drive in the lower classes of European racing. He graduated to Formula One and the Tyrrell team but after one season, returned to the. United States to try the Indy-car circuit. And last season, after wins at the Pocono 500, Sanair (Montreal) and Cleveland, he caught Penske's eye.

--1 "Danny and I had been friends for a long time and Frank Falkner, Danny's mentor, always communicated with me about what Danny was doing," Penske said Sunday. "And as the season rolled out last year, 1 started to realize this was the guy we had to beat. Fortunately for me, Danny was available at the end of the season and based on his performance, and riot on our friendship, he got the quarterback's job." The move paid dividends in double. With Penske's No. 1 driver.

Rick Mears, recovering from crash injuries, Sullivan became the team's primary test driver. "He spent from the middle of November on testing for us every single week somewhere and never complained," Penske said. "He's run three or four thousand test miles for us and today I guess he got the fruit of all his work." Those fruits will be green, as in dollars, when the Speedway announces its payoff tonight The winner's share of the purse could amount to a half-million dollars. Not bad for an ex-cabbie. "Did you ever spin a cab?" Sullivan was asked.

"Yeah," he replied, a bit sheepishly. "Once, in Central Park, playing around with another cab. We were racin'." The only thing Sullivan couldn't remember was if that other hack was an Italian. 3-Danny Sullivan 3-Roberto Guerrero TP- Unser Sr. 5-John Rutherford I6-Arie Luyendyk 7-Johnny Parsons -8-Michael Andretti 9-Ed Pimm 10-Howdy Holmes Mi -2-Mario Andretti HI i iA 1 Is 400 Miles (160 Laps) Driver Car No.
