expense money and another by nut making the race. He figures last place was worth $14,000 and he had a sponsor all set if he made the starting field. Rasmussen was one of five car owners who sued the Speedway and USAC for $1 million because they felt they didn't get an adequate chance to qualify. The suit has been venued to Hancock County and will be heard sometime in the next year. "I was really down after Indianapolis," Rasmussen said.

"I thought about giving up the racing and concentrating on my shop but I changed my mind real quick." So, in mid-June, Rasmussen locked the doors to his shop, cutting off all income for two weeks, and traveled to the Pennsylvania mountains for the Pocono race. His expenses for the two weeks would come' to about $10,000 and he knew that if he didn't make the show and do reasonably well, he was out of racing for some time. "I would have had to park the car and work my tail off to pay the bills," he explained. "I wouldn't have gone bankrupt but my banker didn't know he was financing a race car this season, and I would have had to hustle to pay back some loans." As it turned out, there weren't that many able cars at Pocono and Rasmussen edged into the field, starting dead last (in 33d position) in his own "Ras-Car," which he designed, built, sponsored and drove. "I THOUGHT A LOT about how I had to finish the race and there was some extra pressure," he admitted.

"I knew to the penny what it would cost me if I crashed." Staying out of trouble, Rasmussen drove his way to a ninth place finish although he was eight laps behind the winner at the finish. His paycheck was $7,400. "I still lost about $3,000 for the two weeks," Rasmussen concluded, "but it was a great race for many reasons. "I won't have to worry about taking a refresher test now at every 500-mile track I go to, I've got a good shot at picking up a sponsor and best of all, since the loss wasn't that bad well, I can still go racing and keep picking up experience until I get into the big money." shop every department tonight 9 p.m. to El p.m.

Eldon Rasmussen is 37 years old. He started racing in his native Canada at the age of 8. Before he became attracted by the lure of USAC gold and glory in 1971, he drove more than 600 races in everything from go-carts to sprint cars to stocks. HE MAY WELL BE an excellent driver, but nobody knows for sure yet because he doesn't get a chance to drive that often. He doesn't get a chance to drive that often because he is trying to run and finance his own show.

Since arriving on the USAC scene three years ago, Rasmussen has been in only three championship races. The Pocono show last Sunday -was his first 500-miler. In 1971, Rasmussen also decided to settle in Indianapolis and open a race shop on the far-Westside. The shop has proven a success, and Rasmussen now does about 70 per cent of the repair work on the USAC championship cars as well as design and fabrication work. He currently is working on the car Mario An-dretti crashed at Pocono.

If he kept the shop running all the time and quit pumping profits into his own race cars, Rasmussen undoubtedly would be in excellent financial position. He doesn't and he isn't: At the Indianapolis "500" this year, Rasmussen estimates he lost about $25,000 in viti. i i.sox famous make polyester pants- famous Daeron trailers jumor summer coordinates orig. $7 to $25 1697 Summer jackets, cnulottes, and tops and pants, shirts. My knees crack a lot. They didn't used to. The reason it's a problem, is that I am doing a iot of sports, which I am pretty good at, and Fm worried that I might have to stop. Our doctor checked me and said everything was O.K. But my knees keep going off with big cracks.

Should I ask my parents to send me to a specialist? They don't hurt or a i g. What's happened? ANSWER: The pistol shots in your knees are quite common, especially at your age, when much bone and muscle growth is occurring and settling down. The inside of the knee joint is a very complex piece of apparatus and contains muscles, bones, tendons, spaces, "washer and cartilage. Perfectly normal knee joints can, and do, snap, crackle and pop when they move. It's awfully important for these joints to be examined lest something needs correcting.

And this your doctor has done. I agree with his opinion that you needn't worry. If pain does start (I don't think it will), please fco "back to your doctor. He may want to ask a bone specialist to look, but again I don't think it will be necessary. (CopyrljM Health Capsule By M.
