SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 18, 1989 -THE INDIANAPOLIS STAR- B-3 It could be Everett, or Herrmann; Tupa, or Hogeboom ASSOCIATED PRESS Anaheim, Calif. Jim Everett will probably start at quarterback for the Los Angeles Rams against Phoenix Sunday at Anaheim Stadium. Then again, it might be Mark Herrmann. The starting quarterback for the Cardinals could be Tom Tupa. But it might be Gary Hogeboom.

Seldom have things been so unclear at the quarterback position for both teams in the final days before a Natioal Football League game. Everett, who was named the NFC's offensive player of the week after completing 18 consecutive passes during the Rams' 31-10 victory over the New. York Giants last weekend, missed Wednesday's practice with a stiff lower back. On Thursday, Rams coach John Robinson said there was a 20 percent chance Everett might not start. "The most likely scenario is that Jim will continue to improve these next two days and start." Robinson said.

"If we had to decide today, we'd go with Mark Herrmann, with Jim available as a fairly healthy backup." Robinson said there were four possible scenarios involving Everett. "One. he's fine and he starts." Robinson said. "Two. his back is a little sore, Herrmann starts but Jim is available off the bench.

Three, Jim is available only in an emergency, and four, he can't play and we activate (rookie) Jeff Carlson." Robinson said the first possibility figured to be about 80 percent certain. Then, tongue-in-cheek, he said the sec ond was 9.3 percent possible, the third was 6. 1 percent possible, and the fourth was 2.4 percent possible. Everett has started every game this year and thrown for 2.514 yards, while Herrmann has thrown just four passes in a reserve role. Cardinals coach Gene Stallings, meanwhile, refused to name a starting quarterback.

Tupa, a two-year pro, came off the bench against Dallas and threw for 245 yards and two touchdowns in the second half of the Cardinals' 24-20 come-from-behind victory, but that didn't prompt Stallings to bench Hogeboom. When he was asked whether his starter would be Tupa or Hogeboom. Stallings hesitated before saying. "Probably." Then, he added, "We probably won't make an announcement. It doesn't make much difference anyway." Although Hogeboom is a 1 0-year veteran who has thrown for 1,934 yards this year.

Robinson agreed. "We're not concerned which one starts." he said. "If they're hot. they can hurt you. if they're not, they won't.

We are concerned that they will try to throw the ball on us." Coming off their one-sided win over the Giants, who are now 8-2, the Rams are once again being called solid Super Bowl contenders. Meanwhile, the Cardinals, who have been riddled by injuries which have sidelined 18 starters for one week or more, are being praised for their determination, and little else. Yet the fact remains that only one game separates the two teams. With six games left this season, the Rams are 6-4 and tied with Chicago and Philadelphia for the two NFC wild-card spots available. Phoenix, meanwhile, has quietly achieved a 5-5 record and is still in the hunt for a playoff berth.

"They're a good team that's had a lot of injury problems that staggered them," Robinson said. "But they've managed to go 5-5. You have to admire them for that." Stallings has been so busy patching holes in his lineup, he hasn't had time to worry about the Rams or any opponent. "I've never been around anything like this." said Stallings. who began his coaching career in 1957.

"We've lost 19 players for four weeks or more." Yjga a i i JL i ft IMS dismisses Palmer as 'oice of Indy 500' Lou Palmer, the "Voice of the Indianapolis 500" claims he has been fired. "Palmer had no prior Indication that the Speedway or Duffy were not satisfied with his performance on the broadcast Reason given for the firing was that the Speedway needed someone who could spend more time representing racing and the Speedway." However, Duffy, who is president of Wabash Valley Broadcasting, which is owned by the Hulman family, which also owns IMS, claims the press release was inaccurate. "Lou was informed this morning his services wouldn't be required next year as chief announcer, but we asked him to stay on as part of our team as he's been the past 30 years," Duffy explained. Donaldson, who is marketing director of IMS, concurred. "There is no question that we discussed his (Palmer's) future and that we wanted to make a change," Donaldson said. "Being relieved as chief announcer is not a promotion, obviously," Duffy said.

"We asked him to stay on the broadcast team and he said he would think" about it. Palmer, who serves as a news department announcer for WIBC, could not be reached for comment.
