of 36. THE INDIANAPOLIS STAR -SATURDAY, AUGUST 15, 1981 Noted Austrian conductor Karl Boehm dead at 86 N. Y. TIMES NEWS SERVICE Karl Boehm, the Austrian conductor, died in his home at Salzburg, Austria, Friday of a stroke suffered in March. He would have been 87 on Aug.

28. A guest appearance by Karl Boehm at the Metropolitan Opera House or New York Philharmonic in recent years was invariably a signal for an ovation of unusual audience warmth and respect. Always a popular conductor in New York City, Boehm and his reputation increased steadily over the years after his debut at the Met in 1957 leading "Don Giovanni." TO MANY persons, he stood as the last representative figure in the German- Josie Q. Bassett Obituaries ic-Viennese tradition of music-making that included such legendary conductors as Wilhelm Furtwangler, Clemens Kraus, Erich Kleiber, Karl Muck and Bruno Walter. Boehm's specialties were Mozart, Wagner and Richard Strauss, and he led most of the major operas by these composers during his Met career of 21 years.

He knew and worked with Strauss for many years, and the composer dedicated his opera "Daphne" to Boehm. It was in the Metropolitan production of Strauss's "Die Frau ohne that Boehm scored one of his greatest New York successes. AFTER THE company's premiere performance on Oct. 2, 1966, Harold C. Schonberg wrote in The Times: "Among group of Metropolitan Opera conductors, he towers like a Colossus.

One of the last Straussians, he directed the performance with fire and knowledge." Boehm's debut with the New York Philharmonic took place on Dec. 9, 1973 when he conducted music by Mozart, Brahms and Hindemith. Boehm's last appearance in New York was at the Metropolitan Opera conducting the revival of "Die Frau ohne Schatten" in March 1978. He later appeared with the Vienna State Opera during their visit to Washington, D.C. in November, 1979.
