Miss Hayward plays Valerie Hayden, a famous sculptress whose lover is shot and killed by her teenage daughter Dani (Joey Heatherton). Valerie's wealthy mother (Bette Davis) tries to hush everything up as she has always done before, while viciously controlling her daughter's life, but it all lands loudly and lushly in the courtroom. Michael Connors plays Luke Miller, Valerie's estranged husband and Dani's father. Based on Harold Robbins' book, the plot is strongly reminiscent of a similar incident in the life of a famous movie star, and it's all grandly melodramatic. 9:30 P.M.

According to her account, JFK discovered his charm early and used it throughout his life to get people to give in to him. "Nothing material bothered him very much," she said. "He was always more interested in the book lie was reading or the speech he was writing." PRESIDENT Johnson yesterday signed the bill creating a private, non-profit corporation for public broadcasting to promote noncommercial television and radio. As he did so, he drew a blast from the educational broadcasters themselves at the National Association of Education Broadcasters Convention in Denver.

Dr. John F. White, president of National Educational Television, said he is convinced "the worst thing that could happen in this country would he the establishment of a government-operated radio or television network." That, of course, is the menace which has been seen in the new measure, As it now stands, the bill only sets up the new idea of an independent operation functioning under a loose governmental charter. EVEN THE initial seed money of $9 million must still be authorized by the House Appropriations Committee, according to the New York Times. Further ahead is anticipated congressional debate on how to raise the $200 million to $300 million required annually for a long-range noncommercial TV service.

Meanwhile Indianapolis has no stake in the affair at all. The city with Baltimore is the only major metropolis in the country without an educational TV station. Sports 8:10 p.m., WIRE Pro Basketball. FtfV'ft Shaw High Timparofurtt Ciptcftd liltUtJ irtcifititft Nl lJcataJ-Conivll sen By JULIA INMAN Ex-President John F. Kennedy's life has been almost over-covered by every media, but CBS' Harry Reasoner managed some endearing footnotes to add to the story last night. In an all too brief lialf-hour program, "JFK The Childhood Years," he interviewed the ex-President's charming mother in the Boston home where Kennedy was born. The result was a warmly engaging telecast that undoubtedly gave more lift to harassed mothers across the nation than even Dr. Soork.

Mrs. Kennedy related a story of a turbulent period in JFK's boyhood when he reacted badly to discipline and threw oranges out the window at boarding school, but added that he pulled out of the phase and developed well from then on. "I say this to give courage to other mothers," she said with a smile. The implication, of course, was that somewhere was another mother who unbeknownst was raising a Mure president, and Mrs. Kennedy reinforced the thought by saying that she "looks at little children and thinks that one of them may be President." OTHERWISE the young Kennedy got 98 on Ivanhoe but didn't do well in Latin and French, was spanked with a ruler when he was small for such things as running across the street jnd was devoted tn a garish children's book titled "Billy WhiskTS." The book reminded Kennedy of her collection of memoirs by heads of state which she collected over the years.

Eisenhower's books, DcGaulle's memoirs all autographed, were included. When she got to Khruschev she resorted to a picture since he hadn't wrilUn his autobiography. After she received it, she got a note from her son saying, "Mother if you arc going to contact the heads of state please contact me or the State Department first," implying that she might muddy the international situation. RAMBLING slightly, she touched on the famous Kennedy family solidarity, her card file on each child which stemmed not from efficiency but "Kennedy desperation" since the nine arrived so quickly and other points of interest about JFK's early years. Apparently Mrs.

Kennedy's influence extended well into the ex-Presidenl's political career. She advised him about his ties and warned him to Paintings Valued At More Than $250,000 ahen New York (AP) The disappearance of paintings valued at more than $250,000, including two Picassos and a Lautrec, was reported yesterday by a framing company. Police said a truck with 37 paintings, picked up from various art galleries, was left over the weekend in the garage of APF Frames which repairs, frames and shiDS paintings. Sunday morning the truck was found on East 91st Street not far from the garage, and 17 of the paintings were missing. One of those missing was Picasso's "Children in a Luxembourg Garden," a 13-by 19-inch painting valued at Also missing were Picasso's "Females-Mother and Nur.se," and a Lautrec poster.

Rain is forecast today over the Pacific Northwest, northern California and parts of Texas. Snow flurries are expected in the mountains of Idaho, northeast and middle Atlantic states.
