THE TAX SITUATION Editor, The News: We agree with The Daily News that the trouble with Oneida and other northern, counties Is the wide variation in assessing-. It is only necessary to compare one's tax receipts of 1918 to 1921 with the tax receipts 1927 to 1929 to find that at this time we are paying approximately 150 per cent more taxes on the same property.

Also, in comparing the dolinauent tax list for the period, we find that there was very little if any delinquent tax up to 1921, whereas from 1927 to 1929' nearly one half the acreage in the county is delinquent. In 1920 there was a ready market for real estate whereas in 1929 real estate can't find a market at any, price. I It is easy enough to see the rea-j son for this condition. The inflated valuation and rates created to finance the expansion of a public 1 building program, which encouraged extravagance in the expenditure of public funds to tho extent that if the owners of the cheaper grades of land paid the tax rates on the inflated assessments for five years they will have paid the commonwealth more money than what their lands will sell for. This county and other counties in the cutover timber land area will eventually become bankrupt unless they change their present policy.

Instead of raising- valuations year after year, lower values so that property owners can afford to pay their taxes. No citizen wants to let property go delinquent and eventually have his title cancelled, providing he can retain the title without paying more money than what it will sell for and the county will be off with half a loaf than none. It might, be well for the' northern counties to copy methods employed in some of the southern counties, wlrisrc oiY May 1, 1920, F. A. Taylor, supervisor of assessments for Rock county, recommended a cut of approximately in the assessed j-alue of farm land in Rock! county following- a series of me'et.
