6 THE INDIANAPOLIS STAR SATURDAY, JUNE 22, 1968 Demo Women Take Active Part In Helping Favorite Candidates By MARY ANN BUTTERS It takes a party convention bring then women from their usual behind-the-scenes roles in politics, This became obvious at yesterday's Democratic State in the with girls 1 active, all vocal support of their favorite candidates. They came from secretarial jobs, government offices, college campuses and kitchens all over the state. SENATOR BIRCH BAYH, although an unopposed nominee for the United States Senate, had 250 young Indiana Fairgrounds marching, about the Coliseum, cheering in his behalf. The white-hatted, cheering entourage, struck a sharp contrast to another avid supporter of the Senator's, Mrs. Bayh.

She sat quietly with her husband and 12-year-old son, Evan, in their box seats near the speaker's platform. "Having no opposition makes it nice. But OPP realize it's only temporary, So we can't enjoy this too long." the blond senator's wife cautioned herself. MARVELLA BAYH will fly to Washington, D.C., today to pack bags for their son and herself. "Evan always goes to the seven-week summer camp at Culver Military Academy," she explains.

"And I'll have to pack for me for next week's Girls State." Mrs. Bayh, for the eighth year, will serve as a Federalist Party adviser at the girls' seminar in government at Indiana University, sponsored by the American Legion Auxiliary. After next week, however. she'll be off on the campaign trail. A LESS relaxed candidate's wife sat nearby with her four children.

Maintaining her usual effervescence was Mrs. Robert L. Rock. "I've learned it doesn't do any good at all to be nervous at a time like this, so all I can do is hope," the petite Mary Jo Rock stated before the voting began. After several changes in her decisions as to what to wear yesterday, she finally choose a perky black and white shift.

"I HAD planned to wear my yellow dress, but Bob hates that dress, so I decided to wear a plain white linen. But that would never stay clean." Also in the victorious Rock party was Mrs. Ralph Ferguson of Anderson, Mrs.

Rock's mother. While Mr. Ferguson worked down on the convention floor campaigning for his son-in-law's nomination for governor, she helped care for her red-haired grandchildren. THE BODINE family's location was on the opposite side of the coliseum. The would-be gubernatorial candidate's parents, Mr.

and Mrs. C. C. Bodine came from Mishawaka to witness the vote. Regarding the mounting support amassed by her husband's campaign, Mrs.

Richard C. Bodine quipped, "I feel like a kid in a candy store." The poised wife of the -winner left her job earlier as an elementary school counselor in Mishawaka "either temporarily or permanently, I hope it will be permanent," she said before the balloting. LESSER-KNOWN women also caught up in the political maelstrom filed into the circus-like conclave as well. Miss Karen Owens and Miss Betty Babb, both secretaries for the State Revenue Department, carried Bodine banners throughout the long morning. They decided to take the morning off to campaign because, "Mr.

Bodine's been in our office several times and we like him," declared Miss Babb. ALTHOUGH she admits to never having studied judo or karate, Mrs. Hadley Kenslow's job yesterday was to "keep order" on a section of the convention floor. The attractive assistant sergeant at arms from Bloomington hoped the extent of her duties would be to quietly ask overly-enthusiastic delegates to be seated and remain quiet. Mrs.

Vance Hartke took advantage of the gathering of thousands of her husband's constituents. "I'm roaming about to find out what our people are thinking," said the senior senator's wife, who was all decked out in red, white and blue. The whimsical white bow in her hair bounced as she carried on spirited conversation with friends. was One Anderson delegation at the convention yesterday candidate's family members are (left to right) Karen, 9 was unanimous in several -all red haired. freckled years old; Robert Walter, Kathy, 11; Karel, 9, and Mrs.

The latest is a Captain's Bed with a mahogany frame and cane sides and also practical draw. ers and decorative hardware under cushions of a heavy tweed, leather or vinyl. Good idea for the den. Another Mrs. Draper new item is a round game table with a "built-in" chess board.

Until now. I always had a second-hand katrinka. It took me two years to get the money together and I was really proud of myself.

Friday my girl asked if she uld borrow my car to go shopping. I said OK and Ann Landers gave her the keys. Three hours later she came back and said, "Gee, I'm sorry." She had run into a fire hydrant. Furthermore, she insisted that they must have put it there yesterday because she knows the street like the back of her hand. I now have a smashed fender and a broken headlight, plus a few other small dents.

Total My policy is $100 deductible, which means I am not covered for anything under. My girl made no offer to pay for the damage and when I told her I thought she should have at least offered to share the cost she got mad and threw the keys in my face. This morning I received her check for $100 with a note saying, "Good-by, you cheap heel." What should do? MARTY DEAR MARTY: Send the doll a check for $2 which is what you owe her. People who borrow a car should pay for whatever damage occurs when Please suggest colors for draperies, walls and rugs. Could wallpaper be used? I have a room-size braided rug in shades of green.

Should I use that or throw rugs?" DEAR MRS. A pretty royal blue, green and white wallpaper would be a good choice. Then use white curtains. Plain green Then you need the couches red in a geranium or accessories. Mrs.

This should have been discussed when you gave your girl the keys. Anyone who would return a new car with a smashed fender and a broken headlight and not offer to have it repaired is a no-class clod. DEAR ANN LANDERS: am 13 years old and in trouble with my mother. After school a guy I know invited me to work in his, darkroom. He is an amateur photographer and so am I.

At about five o'clock my buddy's dad asked us if we wanted to ride along to deliver something in his pickup truck. The ride ended up being a two-hour trip. When I got home my mother was like crazy with worry. I had meant to. call her but it slipped my mind.

I tried to tell Mom I didn't mean to make her worry and if I had called her she would have said, "OK go." Why are mothers so unreasonable? Please answer in the paper for all kids with unreasonable mothers. VICTIM DEAR VIC: The problem isn't unreasonable mothers but inconsiderate kids. It would have taken you all of two minutes to make a phone call and avoid all the trouble. Next time use your noodle, son. DEAR ANN LANDERS: Our son, 23 years old, told us last night that he is marrying Marnie next month.

She is a lovely girl, bright, pleasant and has gone with Ed for two years. Problem: Her parents live 40 miles from here but we've never mei them. Ed says they are crazy and it's just as well we don't invite them to the wedding. Marnie wants to be married in our living room with only the immediate family present. She said she has no objection to their being present but doubts that they would come.

What should we do? BAFFLED DEAR BAFFLED: Invite Marnie's, parents to the wedding and if they don't wish to come, that's up to them. Alcohol is no shorteut to social success. If you think you have to drink to be accepted by your friends, get the facts. Read "Booze and You -For Teen-Agers Only," by Ann Landers. Send 35 cents in coin and a long, dressed stamped envelope with your request to Ann Landers, The Indianapolis Star.

Ann. Landers will be glad to help you with your problems. Send them to her, The Indianapolis Star, inclosing a stamped, self-addressed envelope. (Copyright 1968) nator. work.

An elegant pedestal base gives it sturdy Rock of Gibraltar look. A circular see-through plastic chair with a bright cushion sunk in its middle would be an asset to any bathroom (or in any room for that matter.) There's a new chair with buckles ornamenting the back, and with its saddle leather seat, it would be the number one answer to the question of what to put in the rec room or study. Have you tried a cube table yet? It gives a "Now" look to your sofa. The new "way-out" designers are all getting their furniture nearer the floor. Even their curved "comfort" models, about five inches from the floor, wouldn't lure anyone over 19 I'm sure.

A whole new line of spotted leopard or wild zebra printed closet accessories--shoe bags, garment bags, hangers, etc. awaits you if you're safari minded. B. P. asks: "I have a group of three windows and a group of two windows with a radiator beneath the two windows in my living room.

Please tell me how to curtain them. Should glass curtains and draperies be floor length or would it be all right to have glass curtains sill length?" DEAR B.
