Officials Today AWTE Sears Sn hrf persons voted in favor of the town becoming a fifth-class city and 17 voted against. Results of that election were certified by the Town Board the next night and the municipal election was set for today. Although few residents of Southport, in southern Marion County, will say so, it appears the move to become a city is the result of Uni-Gov legislation. Ac a town Southport would not have been exempt from becoming a part of the metropolitan government as provided fur bv the Uni-Gov bill.

June 3 when a petition with 475 signatures requesting the change was presented. Following a census and a certification of the population on nc 2ti a special election was ordered for July 13. At the special election, 2.SH Residi-nts of the two-week-old city of Southport will RO to the polls today to elect city officials. Voting will be in the South-port Friends Church annex at the intersection of Union and Church streets from 6 a.m. to 7 pm.

Only one slate of candidates is running for election. Heading the slate Is Eugene A. Wilson, an advertising salesman for WIRE radio, who is running for mayor. Running for city council Robert Anderson, an employe of Mutual Pipe and Supply Company, First Ward: Ra. E.

Carnine, a Diamond Chain Company employe, Second Ward; Alfred L. Pike, a teacher and coach at Emmerich Manual High School, I i' Ward, and James T. H.ll, an RCA employe, Fourth Ward. Running for councilman-at-large is Clinton J. Gressel, also an RCA employe.

PIKE IS THE ONLY candidate who is not a member of the old Town Board. Mrs. Marilyn S. Mayfield, clerk treasurer of the town, is unopposed for clerk-treasurer of the city. The Johnson County Welfare Department has approved a budget of $478,146 for 1970. a decrease of approximately $170,000 from this year's budget of $648,000.

Fred Winslow, director of the welfare department, said that the budget decrease is largely the result of the Medicaid program, effective Jan. 1.
