Lloyd Rudy, the old war-horse of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, sat slumped atop the workbench in the garage of his Wynn's Spit-Fire 500-Mile Race entry and bled slowly deep inside. IN THREE of the last five competitors, stretched back, wriggled his toes and ex later, with the broken line bleeding pressure off the turbocharger, the blower lost boost pressure, the waste gate was prevented from functioning properly and the fuel system metering was thrown out of kilter.

With the repair made, Foyt went back out in 15th place with the leader somewhere around the 130-lap mark. to make it clear thai a major repair on the turbocharger was necessary. During the 24-minute midway layover, the turbocharger was taken off the car and back to the garage area, where team mechanic Bob Dickson welded the broken pressure sensing line back to the intake manifold. The three-time Indianapolis winner 1961. 1SNS4 and 1967 just shook his head. He didn't have much to say-there wasn't much to he said. For the first 78 laps of the Memorial Day Race, A.J. had heen the fastest racer on the track, leading all but 13 of those laps.

By his own reckoning, the 1969 pole sitter had the most competitive car on the track when Andretti clinched first place. BUI IN between was a 24-minute pit stop that erased any hopes I. harbored of becoming the first man in which point he slowed considerably, allowing Ruby to sail back into the lead. Running under the yellow light, A.J. hung on until the 93d lap, when he pitted 45 seconds for fuel and tires on the right side.

The trouble was not diagnosed at that point, and he was back in on the 100th lap. The waste gate was adjusted at that stop, but only one circuit was needed history to post four victories in the 500-Mile Race. The culprit was the same turbocharger on the Ford engine that almost cost A.J. his pole position six days earlier. The culprit was the same but the malfunction was different.

Last Saturday it was a sticking waste gate; yesterday it was a broken boost pressure sensing line. "Everything was peachy Fed Ex. Tox $2 44 (F70xl4) RED or WHITE LINE FIRST-LINE TIRE can with minute care. as I wanted to run," A.J. said after stepping from his car with an eighth-place finish.
