It is a fitting tribute to an automotive pioneer who contributed so much to racing and Lhc industry that a Camaro should pace today's 500, for his was a job well done G.M. and brought it back to the United States. By 1916, Durant moved in a bid for leadership in the mass market and introduced the low priced 400 series. Production jumped to 70,000 cars. By 1917, it rose to 125,882 units.

NOW DURANT was ready to move back as the head of GM. His stock purchases gave him the voting power and in 1918 regain control of G.M., bringing the Chevrolet in with him. From that point on, Chevrolet represented one of the phenomenal growths of American industry. Today, the division's assembly plants turn millions of Chevys which were to follow. Before the millions, however, there was to be the few thousands era.

Durant established the Chevrolet Motor Co. on Nov. 3, 1911 and began producing 1912 models. A total of 2,990 units were made during the first full year of operation. Luke Walton icenter) and Lou Palmer (south plus Victory Lane).

Durant.

Durant, who was regarded as something of a "crapshooter" by the more conservative element of the fledgling automotive industry, had founded GM but had lost control. UNDAUNTED, Durant set out to recapture the company by manufacturing another automobile and using the profits to purchase GM stock. He pulled it off by commissioning Louis to build the car and put his own famous name on it. The start was a far cry from the magnificent Chevro "Stay tuned for the greatest spectacle in racing" has become synonymous with the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Radio Network. The Camaro was the pace car in 1967, and Chevrolet automobiles led the field around for the start in 1948 and 1955. Certainly nothing is more fitting from a name standpoint than to have a Chevrolet as a pace car, for Louis Chevrolet not only was a pioneer auto builder but a pioneer race driver as well. Louis did it when there was no manual to follow.

He and other hardy men like his brothers Arthur and Gaston wrote the book. It was npt without heartbreak, for although Louis built two consecutive 500 winners 1920 and 1921 Gaston was 1 in a grinding Beverly In 1913, Durant merged Chevrolet with the Little Automobile Co. and gave the Little car the Chevy name.
