Fortunately, he's a much more delightful narrator than the man who lives next door, and films of Kenya are much more fun than Bill and Mary at the beach. After WASP was disbanded in December, 1944, ner returned to her former i home town, Houston, and served as pilot for a radio executive. i Mrs. Esther D. Berner yesterday was named the first woman director of the Indiana Aeronautics Commission. How did the 56-year-old woman pilot feel about being the only woman ever named to the top aviation job in Hoosier government? "Nervous," said Mrs.

Berner, "It definitely will be a challenge. I hope I can do the job." I'd better handle it. I'll give it the old college try, at least." MRS. BERNER was appointed yesterday by Governor Edgar D. Whitcomb just before he left to attend the National Republican Governors' Conference at Lexington, Ky.

She joins State Auditor Trudy S. Etherton as distaff department heads of -the Republican state administration. Although she has "always been a Republican," Mrs. Berner is quick to say she is "not a politician." She spent a lot of her time during the last four years flying Democratic Lieutenant-Governor Robert D. Rock the man who ran unsuccessfully against Whitcomb around the state.

Mrs. Berner has worked as a field representative and inspector for the Aeronautics Commisssion for the last eight years under three directors. Her duties have consisted of flying state department heads and other state personnel on official business, Inspection and compliance trin and representing the commis sion at airport dedications and other functions such as flv-ins and shows and air races. MRS. BERNER interprets the principal function of the Aeronautics Commission as "to foster aviation in the state and alwavs strive to cet more, bigger and better airports." She is optimistic about th? future.

"I hope since we have the Governor back of aviation to see some improvements," she said. "No one can do It alone." THE AERONAUTICS Commission plays a vital role in the state's airport development because it must pass on all plans for airport expansion and construction which involved receipt of Federal funds. Mrs. Berner is glad that Robert J. Winter, the outgoing director, is planning to "stay around and help me out for a couple of weeks." THE WEATHER "vA so In December, 1945, she gave up flying to get married and oecome a Hoosier.

Now divorced, Mrs. Berner lives at 5016 Allisonville Road. She is the mother of two sons and a daughter.
