Crawford sets mark for stock-block engines By JOHN BANSCH STAFF WHITER Three days ago, Jim Crawford's backup jengine was among the Of course the car, designed by Nigel Bennett, is obviously an excellent piece of machinery. For the second straight year, Penske's cars occupy the entire front row in the greatest race in the world.

I'm just glad my owner, Pat Patrick, was able to buy one of them for me. I want to congratulate Rick Mears on winning his fifth pole position. He's been the pacesetter all month and he'll be tough to beat on race day. I also tip my hat to Mr. Unser, who shows no signs of slowing down at age 49.

Somebody asked me in the press conference about all of us drivers "over 40" being up front at Indy. I guess we're a little like wine. Now it's time to start working on our race setup and see: how my car operates with a' full load of fuel. But for the moment. I want'; to savor Sunday.

I've always-been thought of as a Grand Prix driver, but today I feel like; I'm an Indy driver. And I like, that feeling. could do it. 1 was the final qualifier of the original, first-day qualifying line and I started out with a lap of 221.948. My next three laps were all between 222.3 and 222.5 and the car was beautifully balanced just like it had been Sunday morning.

But for some reason, I lost more than a half-inch of manifold pressure during qualifying. The boost (we get 45 inches with the V-8 Chevy) regulates your power and I could tell by looking at the tachometer we were a little slower. Sounds pretty funny doesn't it? We were running over 222 mph and I'm using adjectives like slower, but regardless of what might have been, my team and I were extremely happy with our results. My engineer, Morris Nunn. Jionored guests at an auto racing luncheon.

Sunday 4t earned a niche in the Indianapolis Motor Speed-Tvay history book. The Buick V-6 averaged 22 1 .450 miles an hour for the 10-mile qualifying run the iqulckest a stock block engine has ever covered the books momentarily. Not long after Crawford topped the 222 barrier, Tom Sneva. also using a Buick V-6. went 223.176 mph in an aborted qualification run.

Crawford had run 225.960 last week and he thought he had "at least a slim chance" of beating Rick Mears in the battle for the pole. Sunday morning, he reached 221.674. As for race day, Crawford believes he will "do better than last year" when he finished sixth and led eight laps after starting 18th. "I think we can run with anybody over 500 miles if we do the job right. If you're anywhere in the first two or three rows, you're going to have a good chance." Crawford almost violated the controversial new rule which forbids a car from running with all four wheels below the white line during the qualifying attempt.

"I think was about two inches away from losing a lap," he said of his first circuit. The engine, on display at a luncheon Friday, was pressed into service for the first time when a fuel Injector in the No. 1 powerplant failed earlier in the day during practice. "The methanol kind of solidified after a day off and we had a misfire," the 31 -year-old Crawford said in explaining the reason for the change. "We should have flushed out the injectors, we didn't and one plunked." With the untried engine in place.

Crawford was forced to "play around" with the boost the first two laps and the Mac Tools LolaBuick ran slower than expected. "I was trying to get it right and 1 overdid it it cost us some time." said Crawford. After adjusting the boost to his satisfaction. Crawford upped his lap speeds to 221.966 and 222.069 miles an hour. The fourth lap was also in the record four-lap test.

Crawford Crawford earned the Jnside spot on the second row with his quick Tun. He also erased the four-lap stock block record of 220.459 mph set earlier in the day hy Scott Brayton..
