EASY WITH VIESE" Continued from Page 1 "The wings and the slicks made the cars easier to drive. "And the more ground effects they added to cars, the easier It made it to drive here. A lot of drivers still use a lot of the track and drift up to the walls. But with the ground effects, you don't have to brush up against the wall anymore." The turbocharged engines of the early '70s had more than 1,000 horsepower, which still forced drivers to use their brakes to maneuver through the turns safely. It was the ground effects enhancements that Vukovich referred to that changed that.

After a number of accidents 1 973 necessitated a reduction in turbocharger boost, race car designers looked for new ways to make the cars faster. Jim Hall found the answer and brought the Chaparral 2-K to IMS In 1979. Designed by John Barnard, the car featured an undertray and sidepods shaped to create suction and thereby allow the car to corner at higher speeds. In no time, other designers copied or improved on the design and drivers were driving flat out around the 2'2-mile oval without using brakes. I According to AI Unser the jump in speed has literally transformed four turns at Indy Into two.

there ts a short chute between Turns One and Two and Three and Four. At 220. It disappears. There is no more short chute at Indy." This month, the drivers are unanimous in attributing the new IMS surface and Goodyear's latest tire for making the cars stick better than ever in the turns. Corner speeds are closer than ever to straightaway speeds.

As speeds climbed to incredible levels this month, it was easy to forget how amazing a 220 lap had once been. Now, a lap of 230 is being kicked about. Sophomore driver Dominic Dobson maintained that as long as designers kept outsmarting the rulesmakers who were trying to slow the cars down, a 250 lap would not be out of the question. And 1983 "500" winner Tom Sneva quipped that they could probably go 300 miles per hour if Goodyear would make them a tire capable of those speeds. Goodyear spokesman Bill King chuckles at that projection.

"We usually don't try to make the cars go faster, but if they go faster, we will make a tire that will last." King explained. "We've completely rebuilt the tire this year. We always do a lot of testing after a track is repaved and Indy is no exception. "We made changes in the construction of the tire, changes in the mold which changes the shape of the tire and changes in the compound. Those are the three major changes you can make in a racing tire and we did all three this year." Comfort seems to be the key word at Indianapolis this month.

"We try to make the tire feel better to the driver." King continued. "We want to make the car feel more driveable. "It's very important for the driver to feel comfortable. We could make a tire capable of a 230 lap, but the guy could have a heart attack by the time he reaches Turn Three!" When asked about the 230 lap, Jim Crawford, one of the fastest Indy drivers this month, replied: "I don't think it's possible because you would have to reach 235 on the straights and maintain that." Straightaway speeds are probably in the neighborhood of 230 miles per hour and even if a driver is never lifting, centrifugal force is scrubbing off speed. The new track's abrasiveness also contributed, but as polesit-ter Mears found out, a week of constant practice was wearing it down.

"I could see that it was getting lighter it was getting smoother from running on it," Mears explained after capturing a record fifth Indy 500 pole with a 223.885 average in the Penn-zoil PC-18Chevy. On that run. Mears also had to adapt to a problem with his car and couldn't afford the luxury of running in the middle of the track as he had earlier. "I developed a push in the car and I had to free it up," Mears said. "So I had to use more race track." Teammate Danny Sullivan '87 ESCORT PS, PB, air auto, low miles.

"I've always set my car up this way," Sullivan said. "I like to let the car have its head. That scrubs off more speed. Rick (Mears) likes his car to corner tighter.

That's why he uses less track. Something that has changed noticeably is the track. Repaved last fall, the track is now lighter the drivers used the term "cured." "You get used to that playground," said Andretti. a veter an ot 24 indy 500s. "You had cracks and other abnormalities as reference points.

"Then all of the sudden boom it's all black. I think the darkness of the surface was intimidating to some drivers at first. "But after the whole month, it's like being home again. There's no problem now. You flow into your line, but it's a more pronounced line." Gone too are most of the bumps.

That's made it more comfortable to set up the car, as Derek Daly will attest. "Last year, there were a lot more reference points," said the driver of the Raynor LolaJudd. "When you entered Turn One. you were always aware that you were straight when you were going over the bumps. "Down in the middle of One, there was a dip in the road at the apex.

That's 70 percent gone now, but you were aware of a push here. "There was a bump in Turn lwo wnere you would go over the top of it. Your line was determined by the bumps. Now you can turn the car earlier and I think that's why you see drivers taking different lines. "When you got into Turn Three last year, there was a long line of very small bumps.

You needed to stay high to miss them. Now you can run your car anywhere in this turn. "In Four, there was a bump like in -Two where you would have to go over the top. You had to be settled before you turned left. Now you can turn anywhere." Daly, a veteran of five Indy 500s, is pleased with the surface, but not so sure about the repaved pit lane.

"I find it more difficult to be accurate in the pit lane." he said. "With the steel barriers, the hot lane (or outside passing lane) seems a lot narrower. The pit lane could be a problem on race day." And while drivers are taking different lines in the turns, many are also driving down the middle of the straightaway whenever possible. According the Daly, staying away from the walls on the straights is a way to reduce aerodynamic drag which could slow the car if it ventured to close to the wall. He is surprised, however, at the middle-of-the-road style.

"It's always been normal to stay away from the wall, but for some reason people are in the middle more. It may be a function of the way drivers are setting their cars up."
