YOUR CHOICE! TOMATO STAKES OR TOMATO CAGES fk SkJI V-V rla I 2500 moENaJ I (Cr JS! I i I II SERVICE NTHi -M IXi i i I OPEN Memorial Weekend Friday, Its Sun. and Men. Tom Nichols looked out from the Bush Stadium broadcast booth to the field below, where the Indianapolis Indians and the pawtucket Red Sox were getting ready for the second game of a double-header. "Werre just like those guys." Nichols said. "We're both trying to get to the big leagues." A few feet away from Nichols, and probably closer to the big leagues, was Howard Kellman.

the Indians' play-by-play announcer for 14 years. "I'm really happy to be here, but I want to do major-league Sports On The Air By JOHN O'NEILL baseball." Kellman said. "I've been extremely close to a major-league job several times. "I've been disappointed, but not frustrated, and not discouraged. I enjoy this more than anything I could be doing for a living or for a hobby." When Kellman graduated from Brooklyn (N.Y.) College, he wrote to every minor-league baseball club In the country.

He got 25 answers. The Indians were one of three teams that had an opening. "I sent them a tape I did in the upper deck during a Yankees-Red Sox game," he said. "The Yankees weren't drawing well then, so there was plenty of room up there." That's how Kellman and a lot of would-be announcers get their start. They bring tape recorders to the ballpark and do their own play-by-play.

Nichols was graduated in 1986 from Ball State University. The Muncie native still lives there, working at a local radio station. He's now in his second season of filling in as Kellman's assistant. Normally, Kellman is Joined by Tom Akins. The games are on WBCI-FM (100.9) and WXLW-AM (950).

Kellman gets to the park about 2xh hours before the game. He hangs out at the batting cage, talking to players and coaches to get tidbits he'll use on the air. "I think I'm fair. I don't try to become friends with the players." he said. Sure enough, Kellman wasn't apologetic when the Indians muffed a play, and he was quick to compliment the opposition.

He and Nichols chatted amiably, but without gimmicks. The closest Kellman came to a catch phrase is his lilting pronunciation of the word "low." They also work without instant replay, so the first time they see a play is the only time they see it. Of course, if you're listening at home, you don't see the play at all. Kellman does a decent job of painting the picture for you. What's the batter doing? Where are the infielders playing? What about the outfielders? He usually covers them all.

He also keeps tab on helpful detail, such as how many left-handed hitters the Indians have left on the bench, or when the infield-fly rule is In effect. "It's such an Incredible challenge broadcasting baseball on radio. You have to carry the game as an announcer," Kell- man said. "I believe in having a a good time up there, but you can never afford to Iose the flow of the game." The thing that is most irritating and most encouraging about the broadcasts Is the list of sponsors Kellman wades through every game. He squeezes them in between pitches and batters, but the game still might be one-third over before he's finished.

That's the Irritating part. The encouraging part is that the Indians have that many sponsors. Watching the race So you ordered your race tickets almost a year ago. So you shelled out. what, at least $45 for a seat? But apparently, you still might be tempted to stay home and watch it on television.

That's what the Indianapolis Motor Speedway figures. Why else would TV coverage of the race be blacked out locally? But it is. So if you want to watch It on TV. you'll have to drive to Elkhart. Evansville.

Fort Wayne or Terre Haute, where ABC affiliates will carry the race. Locally. WRTV (Ch. 6) will replay the coverage on June 1 1 at 11:30 p.m. Indianapolis-area radio stations carrying the race live are: WIBC-AM (1070): WIRE-AM (1430): WPZZ-FM (95.9): WTUX-AM (1310): WXLW-AM (950): and WZPL-AM (99.5).
