He's going to Dover, Del, to train with a large group of players signed by the Philadelphia Phils for their farm clubs. Accompanying him will be Whitey Davis of Sugar Notch and Bob Maguire of South Wllkes-Barre. Both starred for Meyers before going into the armed forces, Davis on the mound and Maguire in the outfield. Mainiir is slated to play with Insofar as patronage is concerned, tonight's twin bill at the West Side Armory will be successful because of the Wilkes-Barre and Pittston rivalry. Manager Harry Budwesky of Pittston told us-yesterday that he had no trouble getting rid of 1,000 tickets.

Wilkes-Barre, likewise, is selling plenty of pasteboards. On the other hand Scranton and Hazleton managers aren't showing much interest in the advance sale, Budwesky said. He added that Scranton took 200 ducats and Hazleton didn't want many. Budwesky laid the law down who finished the campaign with 20 or more wins. There are a lot of baseball men who will tell you that the jinx may be broken this year.

Hughes is back now, after 37 months in the service. He's 20 pounds heavier, In tiptop shape and has been doing a lot of running in camp here to get his legs In perfect shape for a long grind on the mound. If the Phils can score so trie runs for him, Hughes may be just the boy to toss up 20 victories, a feat no Phlllie pitcher has done since Grover Alexander recorded 30 victories in 1917. "I'm going to be shooting for all I can get," Hughes told this writer in camp. "I've been workine with Srhnnl.

Hazleton and Scranton are even In their series with one win each while the Barons hold two decisions over Pittston. The teams are playing a five-game series. Winners meet in the finals. Some of the, outstanding players In this region and in the American League will be seen in action.

Pittston will depend upon Hill-house, Schectman and Klotz of the Philadelphia Sphas to carry the burden of its attack. With the exception of Paul of Wilmington of the American Legion, who will re- place the injured Jack Hogan In the line-up, Wilkes-Barre will count on the same players who team. Davis is using players from many schools while Roman has the SwoyervUle High quintet.

Kovac's Market of Luzerne, using the high school team of that borough, champions of the Valley League, lost out when Ashley Shamrocks rallied fai the last quar- ter to win, 38-34. South Wilkes-Barre Mohawks, using Meyers per formers, failed to protect a big lead and bowed to Schacht's Service Station of Plymouth, 58-5L Pete Ravin featured for Davis with 21 points, second highest number of tallies made in this portion of the tourney. Davis took a 15-1 lead and then the reserves played the remainder of the first half and the Forty Fort boys perked up. But it was one-sided when the regulars returned to action again. Gildea and Curry featured Ashley's late spurt.

The Shamrocks trailed by six points early In the last period. But they tied it up at 32-all and Curry broke the dead' lock with a goal. Gildea won the game with a pair in the last minute. Pozda kept the West Siders in the running with 'a goal 30 seconds before the end to make it 34-36, but Gildea came through with his final one to decide the issue. The Mohawks enjoyed a 12 point margin in the second Quarter.

The Barons took him for two straight in the semi-final play-offs and need another win In the remaining three games to reach the finals. Klotz had an answer all ready for Budwesky, however. He said the reputation of the Sphas was at stake to some degree tonight since the Barons had beaten the Sphas and licked Pittston in two games in which Sphas players were featured. "We figure to beat that club at least once," Klotz told Budwesky.

Art Hillhouse, six-foot nine-inch center, and Ossie Schectman will be the other Sphas playing with Pittston. Eddie White, manager of the Barons, is leaving nothing undone to make this the finest sports show ever staged at the Armory.
