Refinements of past year put Chevy engines in front the stock blocks, all the engines at the Speedway have that. It's a matter of the Chevy being new, being upbeat in design, and being backed by technical resources and money. Designed by Mario Illien, the "II" half of Ilmor Engineering which builds the motor In Brix-worth, England, the V-8 Is modern and it Is powerful. Unfortunately, like a lot of volatile love affairs it also has been known to be a little bit fickle. The V-8 has stood up and bitten a few people on occasion.

But engineers working on the motor feel they have soothed its temper tantrums. Engineering research revealed weaknesses In the valve train and oiling system. It led Chevrolet Special Products engineer Bob Applegate. who is Chevy's liason engineer with Ilmor Engineering, to state. "If we conducted the same tests with the old system that we have been conducting with the present system, we would have concluded there were some races which we should not even have entered." Last year the valve springs ran in a resonance (vibration) band at certain engine rpm levels which promoted breakage.

"We changed pieces around so we're not getting into harmonics where the engine is going to, run." Illien said. "You're always going to have some, but now not where you're going to race." One of the changes made was to modify the profile on the lobe of the camshaft. Illien took the Fifth Amendment on the amount of lift or valve duration (crankshaft rotational degrees of remaining open), saying only, "The gear train has been Improved over last year. We're running without valve train problems." The problem with the lubrication system last year lay, of all places, in the oil filter. "The filter wouldn't stand the vibrations or the (oil) flow rate which was needed during a race," Applegate said.

"It was a big problem with AC (Spark Plug Division). Now they've developed a unique design that's not production related, and it will stand the pressure peaks developed under acceleration." There was a problem with Danny Sullivan breaking a crankshaft, but Applegate said that was traced down to a quality problem In machining the crank. After an extensive program of looking at every crankshaft made for the Indy V-8 it was discovered some had problems. "There's nothing wrong with the crank," Applegate said. "We've run them thousands of miles and they haven't failed." Whether a Chevrolet Indy V-8 is going to win this thing is another matter.

Five-hundred miles still is a long way to go, even today, and the tout sheet says six Chevys and 27 of something else. But five of those six are starting up front, and they're going to change the face of American racing. By GEORGE MOORE STAR STAFF WRITER The front row for the 1988 Indianapolis 500-Mile Race wasn't decided at the Speedway Saturday. It was decided April 10 at Phoenix International Raceway at Phoenix, and on the streets of Long Beach, April 17. AH that remained to be done yesterday was to write in the names of the fastest five qualifiers, and after each one add the name "Chevrolet Indy V-8." At Phoenix, it was Rick Mears who took the No.

1 qualifying spot with a Chevrolet Indy, and Mario Andretti with one of the Chevy engines won the thing. One week later the four fastest qualifiers were Chevrolet powered, with No. 4 qualifier Al Unser taking the victory. The blind or stupid aside, it was obvious weeks ago the dominant engine on the USAC and CART racing scene had changed. It's no longer Coswsorth.

It's now Chevrolet. That's only following precedent in the long history of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. There always have been eras where a given powerplant was dominant. It started with the Peugeots of the 'teens, worked up through the Frontenacs. the Millers, the Offles, the Indy Ford V-8s and finally the Cosworths.

Now It's Chevrolet, and not hard to figure. It's more than Just a V-8 with four overhead camshafts and four valves per cylinder. With the exception of 1 141 k- -I o4C jjytyZ T4 I UNITED PRESS INTERNATIONAL Budding problems Bobby Rahal gives a disgusted look to his engine which failed to start when it came time for his qualification run. Rahal did not get a chance to qualify Saturday..
