THE INDIANAPOLIS STAR FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 16, 1988 TVHADIO E-10 They're court jesters for Tracey Ullman, queen of skitcoms that in her Fox show seen locally at 9:30 p.m. Sundays on WXIN (Channel 59) the British cpmedienne switches easily from a Cockney accent to the voice of 14-year-old American teen Francesca, and every dialect in between. People are so curious about the real woman behind the 1 ,000 voices that McMurray has formulated a stock response about calling Ullman in the middle of the night and finding out "she talks just like you and me." But they don't think NBC, CBS or ABC would know how to handle the expensive Tracey Ullman Show, where sketches are often abandoned at the 11th hour or reworked until the original idea is no longer recognizable. "A network wouldn't have the time, money or patience for us," said Castellaneta.

They speak from experience. McMurray was in a network pilot that didn't work out, while Castellaneta chose the opportunity of playing different characters on Ullman's show rather than star in a short-lived network series, Nothing in Common. (He had appeared In the Tom HanksJackie Gleason movie of the same name.) He lapsed into an eerie imitation of Ullman's voice. "Tracey always says. 'You're so lucky.

She's actually from Missouri." Malone chimed in: "Canada. We've caught her saying Whatever. The good news is that this motley crew goes back to work Oct. 7, with new shows expected to begin airing In late October. Ann Levine will be a new cast regular.

Don't worry, Julie Kavner fans: The Burbank native who sounds like a New Yorker will still be around. Another change Is that Matt Groening's Life in Hell cartoons will be clustered together, instead of airing one at a time before commercials. Otherwise, The Tracey Ullman Show will be more wonderful ensemble comedy, with sketches like the one where the boyish Malone played a cop who danced, not talked, a possible Jumper off a ledge. That appearance supposed to be a one-shot led to Malone becoming a series regular. The dancer has worked with Michael Jackson.

Lily Tomlin and Barbara Mandrell. (It hasn't all been glamorous; he once played a frog iri a Cinco de Mayo shopping mall celebration.) "I'm living a dream come true," he said, grinning. How could you not like working on this show? One of my favorite sketches concerned a low-budget USO troupe doing a rapid-fire performance for the sole soldier at an Artie outpost. "What's big up here?" asked the troupe's comic. The cast of The Tracey Ullman Show is (from left) Julie Kavner, Joe Malone, Ullman, Sam McMurray and Dan Castellaneta.

The Tracey Ullman Show, more skitcom than sitcom, has endeared itself to critics, if not to the American public at large. While its demographics are good the show ranks 30th among all programs in popularity with adults 18 to 34 it hasn't found more than a cult following so far. "The audience steadily grows," said the dark Castellan eta, a former Second City member, who had a five o'clock shadow at noon.

"The people who watch us love us," he said. "The people who don't watch us generally don't know about us." But the trio think that's changing. "We're getting more attention now as Individuals, and all this time the show has been in repeats," said McMurray, who played Nicholas Cage's loutish boss In Raising Arizona. "So it's people seeing the show for the first time," he said. "They're tuning into our reruns TV highlights 9:00 P.M.
