When the tempo got lively, the arrangements showed some independence to complement Tennille's spunk. Cot Rhythm, I Won Dance and Cheek to Check (to name a song by each of the featured composers) took a few witty turns and displayed colorful instrumental plumage.

Tennille closed the show with an anthemlike (how else can you sing it?) God Bless America, then wisely turned to an encore that was all melting wistfulness Gershwin's Someone to Watch Over Me. Kunzel, who is celebrating his 30th year as a professional conductor this season, showed his snappy authority In the first half. A grandiose arrangement of Jeremiah Clarke's Trumpet Voluntary In major (formerly attributed to Henry Purcell) opened the concert. Samuel Barber's Adagio for which qualifies for a pops program by virtue of its prominence in the 1986 movie Platoon, was sensibly positioned to separate a pair of symphonic-pops bullies Rossini's William Tell Overture and Tchaikovsky's everything-but-1 he-samovar rouser. 1812.

By JILL WARREN STAR STAFF NRiTER West Lafayette Though forced tr scale down her choice of venue. Tina Turner did not cut back on any of the energy or excitement during her 105-mln-ute performance here Friday night at the Elliott Hall of Music. Turner moved her show, originally scheduled for Market Square Arena, due to soft ticket sales. While the 6.000-seat Elliott is a long way from Indianapolis' Beef Boards Dinner Theatre, where Turner occasionally performed before her overwhelming 19H3 comeback, it's also a notable drop from the sold-out arenas to which she has become accustomed. The drop in popularity is no doubt due to her successful but overlong tour of Europe, as well as the lack of new material.

With the exception of a cover tune, the terrific Turnerlzed Addicted to Love, the leggy singer presented no new music. Returning in a green fringed corset.

Turner captivated fans with her version of Robert Palmer's Addicted to Love, which led nicely into a highly stylized Private Dancer. During We Don't Need Another Hero, Turner was raised 10 feet above the stage on a smoky lift. Her saucy singing on What's Love Cot to Do With It was a hit with fans, who eagerly sang along at her command. Turner wound down her set with a fantastic version of Let's Stay Together and her classic Proud Mary, but was called back to the stage for two encores. Though she milked the ovation.

Turner and her band returned for a fine quartet of Show Some Respect, Steel Claw, It's Only Love and Nut bush City Limits. She closed the show with Paradise Is Here. The English dance-rock band Go West opened the evening with a 45-mlnute set of catchy music that, with the exception of the modest hit We Close Our Eyes, failed to elicit any sort of reaction from the then-stone cold audience. Perhaps the crowd was pining for ace rocker Marshall Crenshaw, who played Buddy Holly in the film La Bamba and was originally scheduled to open the Program Clarke. In a kind of musical palindrome I'm Adam" Is an example of the verbal kind), the popular classics occupied the all-orchestral first half, which ended with a noisy performance of Tchaikovsky's 1812 Overture. Vocalist Toni Tennille led a tour of some classic pop after intermission, with respectful, spirited visits to the shrines of George Gershwin, Jerome Kern and Irving Berlin. Tennille commands a throaty, slinky contralto that exudes conviction about her material. Style never overshadows substance, and. with few exceptions, a fond- tionate, gently informative and free of mindless "patter." Tennille brought with her some flattering but never bloodless arrangements, a stack of which Kunzel gamely shifted from one music stand to another as he and the orchestra worked their way through them.

ness for jazzy phrasing doesn't obscure lyrics that are often as fetching as the tunes. Given this range and the swinging connectedness of Ten-nine's vocal line, her performances evoked such worthy models as Cleo Laine, Sarah Vaughan and even Mel Torme. A persistent drawback was her tendency to hit a pitch low and never quite move up on top of it. Nonetheless, it's heartening to see a younger entertainer giving so conspicuous a boost to the best of Tin Pan Alley. Her comments between songs carried the ring of sincerity: they were affec WHEN IN SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA VISIT NIVEPSAL BTUOIOS TOUR -9 ft.
