THE INDIANAPOLIS STAR- SUNDAY, MAY 30, 1976 PAGE 8 SEC. 4- STAR SPORTS SCOREBOARD Lauda Wins Pole For Today's Monaco Pro Baseball A. L. Boxes N. L.

Boxes World Team Tennis the six-wheel Tyrrells. Lauda's pole speed was 82.64 miles an hour with a time of 1 minute, 29.65 seconds, a new unofficial record for the track, modified with two new S-bends at each endi of the starting straightaway. ITALIAN ARTURO Merzario walked away from the only serious accident of the two final practice sessions yesterday morning after plowing his March into the guard rails at the top of the long hill. He was among the five drivers who failed to qualify for the 20 starting spots. The others were Belgian Jacky Ickx for the second straight race, in a Williams; France's Henri Pescarolo, in a Surtees, Australian Larry Parkins in a Boro, and German Harald Ertl, in a Hesketh.

Fifth fastest over-all was the second Tyrrell, driven by South African Jody Scheckter. Monte Carlo, Monaco (AP) World champion Niki Lauda of Austria used a track-searing burst of speed yesterday to fight off the Tyrrell challenge and comfortably take the critical pole position for today's Monaco Grand Prix. The Ferrari team was so confident it called Lauda in with 30 minutes of the final qualifying session to run, and Lauda stood on the pit watching his rivals vainly attempt to match his time. His teammate, Clay Regazzoni of Switzerland, kept blasting round the narrow, twisting streets of this Riviera resort to run second fastest and make it another Ferrari front line in the season the red Italian cars are dominating. Sweden's Ronnie Peterson put his March into a surprising third spot on the special grid, with France's Patrick Depailler fourth fastest in the first of BLOOMINGTON BICENTENNIAL CLASSIC LADIES P.G.A.
