They pose no threat to Carter's imposing lead of 783 pledged delegates. But the psychological impact of losing more primaries could hurt.

Carter hopes to bring 1,200 to 1,300 delegates to the convention; 1,505 are needed for nomination. FRONT-RUNNING Carter has lost five of the last nine primaries. Of the four he won, three were in border states where he was virtually unopposed and Michigan was a close call over Udall. Church, of Idaho, has a streak of three wins and is favored in Montana. He is a neighbor and the only candidate to campaign in the sprawling, sparsely settled state.

Udall, yet to get his first primary win, goes against Carter in South Dakota. Before the voting begins, Udall plans to complete four days in the state, a saturation effort which has worked well against the thinly spread Carter. There is no statewide popularity contest in South Dakota, only election of delegates pledged to candidates or uncommitted. Udall is indorsed by Senator George McGovern, the 1972 Democratic presidential candidate, and Senator James Abourezk in their home states. CHURCH AND Brown are spending the final four days of the campaign in tiny Rhode Island.

Carter has made only three trips there but has the best organization. Brown, who has victories in Maryland and Nevada to his credit, failed to get on the Rhode Island ballot but he is campaigning hard for uncommitted delegates. Mr. Ford, backed by party leaders, is favored in Rhode Island. There are 19 Republican delegates at stake.

In South Dakota, Mr. Ford and Reagan are even in the battle for 20 delegates. The Republican primary in Montana is a nonbinding "beauty contest." The GOP's 19 delegates will be elected at a state convention the last weekend in June. By United Press International Jimmy Carter's drive for a first-ballot nomination at the Democratic National Convention, slowed by a series of defeats, faces new challanges this week in the Rhode Island, South Dakota and Montana primaries. President Ford and Ronald Reagan continue their pursuit for the Republican presidential nomination through the three widely separated states.

But they are merely a prelude to June 8, when California, Ohio and New Jersey hold the last primaries which could decide the Republican nominee and perhaps determine if the "Stop Carter" movement can deny the presidential nomination to the Georgian. MR. FORD AND Reagan ignored the Rhode Island, South Dakota and Montana primaries Tuesday and are looking ahead to "Super Tuesday." Reagan calls California "Big Casino." But Idaho's Frank Church, Arizona's Morris Udall and California's Jerry Brown are primed in Rhode Island, South Dakota and Montana. This could mean more trouble for Carter, the winner of 17 primaries. 43 85 68 87 38 57 40 78 41 91 65 85 58 72 62 75 49 83 76 87 54 68 50 75 46 80 72 83 43 76 58 75 60 79 63 96 55 71 52 68 46 60 61 80 75 87 PtCldy 53 66 PtCldy 52 72 PtCldy 6281 Cloudy 48 87 PtCldy 60 69 Shwrs 6176 PtCldy 6169 sunny 43 94 sunny 5S70 PtCldy 5271 Stiwrs 45 60 Rain 59 82 PtCldy 69 88 Tstrms 50 75 PtCldy 49 89 Tstrms 59 68 PtCldy 50 62 PtCldy 75 88 PtCldy 57 47 Cloudy 47 58 49 87 PtCldy 43 74 PtCldy 4310 Cloudy Pittsburgh Shwrs Portland, Me Cloudy Portland, Ore.
