(UPI) Canada's declaration of a 200-mile fishing limit will take effect New Year's Day, following signing of a formal order. External affairs Minister Don Jamie-son, vacationing at his summer home here, signed the enabling order-in council Wednesday in a brief ceremony.

The planned declaration was announced last summer. Major fishing nations, including the Soviet Union, already have signed treaties recognizing Canada's right to manage fish stocks and set quotas within 200 miles of Canadian coastlines.
