SUNDAY, MAY 23, 1976 THE INDIANAPOLIS STAR SEC 4 PAGET 1 Bears Batter Indians, 6-2 HI PIT PASS I mm 3 Wally Dallenbach has been named chairman of the 1976 Jim Clark ANY CAR FUR ONLY I I CAN STILL PAINT ftc" I former Indianapolis outfielder, unloaded a prodigious homer over the left field corner to make it 6-1. The Tribe run had come in the top of the fourth as Jeff Sovern, an all-league catcher for Denver last year, led off with is third homer of the season. That was all the damage Indianapolis could do to Denver starter and winner Joe Kesner until he tired in the eight.Junior Kennedy's single and a walk to pinch-hitter Keith Marshall gave promise of something good. But Tom Spencer hit into a double play and Rudy Meoli's double was good for only one run. JOE KERRIGAN, MAKING his debut as a Girzzly reliever, procured the remaining four outs, interrupted only by Art DeFreites' harmless ninth-inning single.

Bob Hoyaam, president of the Cincinnati Reds who received special recognition from his alma mater, the Unversity of Colorado on Friday, was on hand for yesterday's game to watch his triple A farmhands. Manager Jim Snyder of the Tribe had most of his players on the field after the game for special batting practice. Ml EXCLUSIVE DIAMOND CL0SS COLORS WITH G.E. SILICONES selection committee. The award is presented annually in honor of the great Scottish driver, who won the Indianapolis 500-Mile Race in 1965 and is considered by many the greatest racer of all-time.

The award is given to "The person in racing, who by his conduct on and off the track, best exemplifies the spirit of Jim Clark." Dallenbach won the award last season. The committee is composed of former winners and the decision must be unanimous. I COMPLETE BODY FENDER REPAIR estimates Denver, Colo. The woes of the Indianapolis Indians continued yesterday as they were slugged into submission by the surging Denver Bears 6-2. It was the 11th loss in the last 14 games for the slumping Tribe and their second straight here.

They will try to salvage a split in the series in a doubleheader today, with Mike Thompson (4-1), a Denver resident, and Larry Payne (2-2) doing the pitching. Denver pitchers will be Denny Blair (0-0) and Larry Landreth (1-2). SOUTHPAW LORIN GROW got off a shaky start against the Grizzly power yesterday afternoon. Tony Scott led off with a single and Grow picked him off first base to prevent a disastrous inning. It was bad enough as Rudy Kinard walked and Gary Roenicke followed with his seventh homer of the season, making him the American Association leader.

Grow moved along smoothly until Jim Cox led off the Denver fourth with his first homer of the year. A walk, a stolen base, and an intentional walk terminated Grow's afternoon exercise an ex-Bear Garlos Alfonso took over and retired the side without further damage after hitting Doby Johnson to fill the bases with nobody out. But the Grizzlies unloaded an extra-base barrage on Alfonso in the fifth for their last three runs. Kinard doubled, Cox tripled and Roger Freed, a STILL AMERICA'S BIGGEST BARGAIN 1 331 w. WHEN MEMBERS OF A. J. Foyt's crew came knocking at the door of the Walther hospitality trailer looking for the missing Coyote mascot, Phil Cole came up with one of his better lines.

"We were only running 177 this morning," related Spike, who only spent a couple of seasons in midgets before taking over his dad's champ car. "The Goodyear guys really helped us but the biggest change came when we let some air out of the front tires and took off the engine cover. "We gained four miles an hour just like that," he smiled, snapping his fingers. "Then Pop (Carl) told me to go out and qualify. "AND THE CAR felt so good, it was almost easy." Scotty, whose final attempt against the fourth turn fence, didn't want to see his speed when he was qualifying.

"I told the guys to show me either a plus or a minus," he said while accepting congratulations from Al Lo-quasto and bumped Tom Bigelow. "And it's a good thing, too, because if I'd seen that 184, my next lap would probably been 175." ROBIN MILLER Rookies Billy Scott and Spike Gehlhausen, slipping and sliding most of the past week on the tricky Speedway rink, turned in a couple of late skates yesterday afternoon that all but iced starting spots for this year's Indianapolis 500. Scott, who spun out while only running 160 miles per hour in the morning practice session, came back to register the third fastest speed' of the day with a 183.383. Gehlhausen, the 21-year old Jasper (Ind.) youngster who hammered the wall a week ago, lifted the "Spirits of Indiana" ith a run of 181.717. SCOTT, DRAG racer who converted to circles in 1970, raised Tom Carnegie's voice and the pit people's eyes with his performance.

"When we spun this morning at 160, the car was so squrrely it was unbelievable," related the 27-year old San Bernardino native. "We put the car up on scales and found that the weight was jacked out of shape in the front end. So we started all over again. "We got up to 182 and Jim (Wright, his chief mechanic) said 'let's put 'er in It felt like a new car." If Spike's McLaren felt that way, it was for good' reason.
