PAGE 23 TUESDAY, MAY 18, 1976 THE INDIANAPOLIS STAR SAVS HOUSTON IS Larway Hoping Winnipeg Series I IE51I the Whalers swamped them 6-1 to deadlock the see-saw series at 3-3. "I can't remember when every one of our guys played so well," said Houston Coach Bill Dineen. Dineen relaxed yesterday with a round of golf before starting plans for the title series. Houston dominated Sunday's game just as New England had the night before. They fired 37 shots to 21 for mal goalie we'd have made at least a half dozen goals but that Raeder is amazing," Laboissiere said.

Grahame agreed. "IF RAEDER hadn't played so spectacularly, it would have been at least 8-0," Grahame said. Dineen said he was concerned when Houston missed three chances in the first two minutes of the second period. the Whalers and backed goalie Ron Grahame. PAUL POPIEL scored in the first period and Mark Howe got loose on a breakaway and beat Raeder from 20 feet with the second scored with just 1:39 left in the game.

Gordon Laboissiere, Aeros center, said it was the most tense game of his career. They are Cliff Bergere of Hollywood, and the late Joe Dawson, who was an established star prior to the inaugural running of the Indianapolis 500-mile speed classic in 1911. They were the only nominees this year to receive 75 per cent or more of the votes cast by the 100 members of the selection committee. Presentation of their Hall of Fame medallions will be made at- the Indianapolis Oldtimers' Club Bar-B-Que at the track on the evening of May 24. BERGERE PARTICIPATED in 16 Indianapolis 5o0-mile races and has driven more miles (6,130) in competition at Indianapolis than any other driver in the history of the track, except A. J.

Foyt, who surpassed Bergere's mark in 1975. Cliff led the field on three diferent occasions (1941, 1946, and 1947) won the pole position in 1946, placed among the first ten eight times and finished third twice. He also was the first driver to go the full distance in a conventional race car (1941 when he finished fifth) without making a pit stop. Dawson is remembered best for winning the 1912 Indianapolis "500" in a National. As a member of the Marmon Team headed by Ray Harroun, however, he won several short-distance races on the Indianapolis track at Atlanta in 1910, and also finished second in the Vanderbilt Cup race of that year, only 26 seconds behind the winner.

With the addition of Bergere and Dawson, 46 individuals now are members of the Hall of Fame. "They should have given him a saliva test to find out what was making him play like that." Coach Harry Neale of the Whalers was disappointed but proud. "When you take the two-time champ to seven games, you've got to be proud," Neale said.

A. Pottur "It's hard to believe this Is the first time you've fished for sleclhcads." Cavs Confident For Last 2 Games Against Celtics Richfield, Ohio (UPI) Cleveland coach Bill Fitch said yesterday the Cavaliers are well aware they have to win the two remaining games in the NBA Eastern series against the Boston Celtics and he confidently predicted "that's what we intend to do." The Cavaliers, who have won their two games at home while losing three at Boston, will host the Celtics at the Coliseum for the sixth game tonight. "We have to win two and that's what we intend to do," said Fitch. "We're still gonna stalk em." "I THINK the clubs are evenly matched. No one hag proved their supremacy yet.

We're the young ones on the block trying to take the crown; they're the older, experienced bucks trying to do it one more time." Celtics coach Tom Heinsohn would like nothing more than to defeat the Cavs in front of the fans who sloshed him with beer and an egg in the last game here. "I just hope the fans realize it's possible Cleveland could lose at home," he said. "Our fans treated the Cavaliers fairly. I don't particularly like eggs and beer thrown at me. BUT HEINSOHN realizes the Cavs are no pushovers at home.

"Cleveland is playing as a team and they have about eight great shooters. You never heard me put them down," he said. As important as anything will he the condition of Celtic captain John a 1 i 's injured foot. "Hondo" played the last five minutes Sunday in Boston's 99-94 win. He failed to take a floor shot, but hit two big free throws.

Boston's team physician said he would make a recommendation wheth- er Havlicek should play immediately before the game: then it will be up to Heinsohn. If the Celts do reach the finals against Phoenix, the same pro-' cedure ill be followed. HAVLICEK ALSO called it "a day by day situation," and disclosed that from 4 p. m. until 11 p.

m. Saturday, he had soaked his foot in cold water for 20 minutes each hour. Of nearly equal importance will be Nate Thurmond, Cleveland's aging center pressed into fulltime duty because of injuries. Filch Is NBA's Coach Of Year New York (AP) Personable Bill Fitch, who guided the Cleveland Cavaliers to the National Basketball Association's Central Division title and their first playoff berth this season, was named yesterday as the league's Coach of the Year for 1975-76. Commissioner Larry O'Brien said Fitch, the only coach in the Cavaliers' six-year history, received 2414 votes from a panel of 54 sports writers and broadcasters, three in each of the NBA's 18 franchise cities.

Al Attles, whose Golden State Warriors won the Pacific Division title for the second straight season, finished second in the balloting with 21 Ms voles. It was the closest race for Coach of the Year honors since 1966, when Dolph Schayes of Philadelphia edged Red Auerbach of Boston. Others receiving votes this year were John MacLeod of Phoenix, Bill Russell of Seattle and Bill van Breda Kolff of New Orleans, two each, and Gene Shue of Philadelphia and Larry Costello of Milwaukee, one each. 2 layout. Houston (AP) Don Larway, right winger for the Houston Aeros, hopes the Winnipeg Jets are not as tough as the New England Whalers. Houston's defending World Hockey Association champions had to use 20 players Sunday night before overcoming the Whalers and their brilliant rookie goalie, Cap Raeder, 2-0, to clinch the seven-game semifinal playoff series. The tough series gave the Aeros the league's U.S. title and sent them into the championship finals against Winnipeg, the Canadian champions.

The best-of-seven final round begins here with games Thursday and Sunday. WINNIPEG WAS idle throughout the Houston-New England series, having clinched the 4-1 Canadian semifinals May 2 against Calgary. Larway said the Whalers were the toughest team he has played against. "I knew when they beat us in the first game of the series that it was going to seven games," he said. "I just hope Winnipeg isn't as tough as those guys.

We're tired." The Aeros picked a good time to play possibly their best game of the season. One of their most dismal per-formances had come Saturday night as Golden Slate Upset Called Dream By Suns Phoenix, Ariz. (AP) The Phoenix Suns, who startled National Basketball Association fans with their victory over defending champion Golden State, are a team without a single "superstar." But they do have a whole lot of hustle. The Suns, picked to finish at or near the bottom in the Western Conference at the beginning of the season, stunned Golden State 94-86 Sunday to win their Western Conference series 4-3. The win vaulted the Suns into the NBA championship playoffs against the winner of the Boston-Cleveland series for the first time since the Thoenix franchise began in 1968-69.

NO WONDER their fans have started calling them the "Sunderella Suns." "It's a dream come true," said captain and original Sun Dick Van Arsdale. who fractured his arm earlier this season and has been playing as a reserve guard. "There was only one thing missing from my life." he added. "I had never played for the world championship. Now, this I still can't believe it has come true." Center Alvan Adams, the NBA's Rookie of the Year, echoed his comments.

"I keep thinking I'm going to wake up and it won't be real," Adams said "First, I didn't expect to play much this year. I became a starter. Then, Rookie of the Year. Now this. I didn't think it was possible to dream such a dream." PIIOEXIX COACH John MacLeod, who coached Adams at the University of Oklahoma and picked him in the NBA draft, cited three turning points in the season.

"First, acquisition of Garfield Heard. Second, Keith Erickson coming back so well from injuries. And third, (assistant coach) Al Bianchi joining us," MacLeod said. The Suns traded rookie John Shumate to Buffalo for Heard in February. Before then, Phoenix was 19-27 and headed nowhere.

But after Heard joined the line-up, the Suns went 23-13 and finished the regular season at 42-40. Then they upset Seattle in the semi-final Western Conference playoffs before taking on Golden State.
