SATURDAY, JANUARY 6, 1990 -THE INDIANAPOLIS STAR- Briefly Clippers surprise Celtics in Boston AUTO RACING FROM STAFF, AND WIRE REPORTS PATRICK, GANASSI ANNOUNCE DRIVERS Longtime Indy-car owner U.E. (Pat) Patrick announced Friday that Roberto Guerrero will be driver of a Miller Genuine Draft Beer-sponsored MarchAlfa Romeo for the newly re-formed Patrick Racing Team while Patrick's former driver and partner Chip Ganassl will campaign a 1989 PC-18Chevy with ex-Formula One driver Eddie Cheever. raincK.ana uanassi, who co-owned last season's CARTPPG championship effort, parted company to run their own teams. With driver Emerson Fittipaldi. the Marlboro-sponsored Pat-rick-Ganassi team captured five races last season, including the Indianapolis 500.

Fittipaldi and Marlboro will be with Penske Racing this season. In a press conference at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Motel, it was announced that Miller would sponsor the Patrick team through the 1992 season and that Guerrero would be driver of the yet-to-be-completed 1990 March Alfa. The 31 -year-old native of Colombia drove the C-5 I 1 1 111 JJ. I Tj yiJiri ff t1 fy SJ jkJ if J- MarchAlfa last season for Morales Racing and Guerrero that team's shop will be used by the Patrick team now that Morales team director John Capels has become CART's executive vice president. The Ganassi team will operate out of the old Patrick Racing shop.

Cheever, a 31 -year-old native of Phoenix, reportedly signed a multi-year pact with Ganassl. A veteran of 134 F-l races, Cheever had for years been the only American in F-l. His sole Indy-car start came in 1986 when he drove for Arclero Racing at Miami. FROM STAR WIRE SERVICES Ron Harper and Benolt Benjamin sparked a 16-2 fourth-quarter rally and the Los Angeles Clippers ended a 10-year Boston Garden losing streak Friday night with a 114-105 victory over the Celtics, who played most of the game without Larry Bird. Harper had six points and Benjamin five in the surge that turned a 97-92 deficit with 7:14 left to play into a 108-99 Los Angeles lead with 45 seconds to go.

The victory broke the Clippers' overall 11 -game losing streak against Boston and was their first In Boston Garden after 10 straight losses since their last win on March 2. 1979. Boston's four-game winning streak ended. Bird sprained his left ankle with 42'seconds left in the first quarter and played just 1 9 minutes, only four in the second half. He left the game with 7:37 remaining in the third quarter and didn't return after scoring 12 points.

Boston was led by Kevin McHale with 20 points. The Clippers were paced by Harper's 28 and Danny Manning with a season-high 26. PHILADELPHIA 104, DALLAS 79 Ron Anderson and Johnny Dawkins highlighted a 21-point Philadelphia run in the first half for the visiting Sixers. The 76ers shot 69 percent in the second period and 60 percent for the first half in building a 60-41 cushion at intermission. Dallas came no closer than 15 points during the second half.

It was the second win in six games for the 76ers on their current seven-game road trip. Dawkins, who scored six points during the streak of 21 straight, finished with 21 while Anderson scored 20. Charles Barkley added 14. The Mavericks were led by 19 points from Sam Perkins. With four minutes remaining in the first period the 76ers led by 18-16, but NBA ROUNDUP the Mavericks did not score tor the remainder of the quarter while Philadelphia built a 30-16 advantage.

Dallas then went the opening 2:28 of the second period without a point as the the 76ers' lead climbed to 39-16. CLEVELAND 119, WASHINGTON 107 The Cleveland Cavaliers overcame a 19-point first-quarter and handed the Washington Bullets a club-record 12th consecutive road loss. Mark Price scored 27 points and Craig Ehlo 23 to spark Cleveland, while Jeff Malone led the Bullets with 28 points but he had only two in the fourth quarter when Cleveland outscored Washington 32-20. The Cavaliers trailed 41-22 late in the first quarter and then rallied behind the hot outside shooting of Price and Ehlo and the inside game of John Williams. Cleveland shot 8-of-11 from 3-point range, with Price going 4-for-4 and Ehlo 3-for-5.

The Cavaliers trimmed the deficit to 62-56 at halftime and it was tied 87-87 entering the fourth quarter. The Bullets led 98-97 on a driving basket by Harvey Grant with 5:58 left but the Cavaliers scored the next nine points. Ehlo's jump shot with 5:10 left gave Cleveland the lead for good 99-98 and Williams and Price each scored three points in the run. Washington's Bernard King, who scored 26 points, hit a jump shot to make it 109-105 with 1:25 left but Cleveland's Larry Nance made two free throws and Randolph Keys scored from inside. Williams, who didn't start, had 18 points and 14 rebounds and Nance added 16 points and 13 rebounds.

CHICAGO 127, ORLANDO 116 Michael Jordan scored 43 points to lead the Bulls to their 12th straight home victory. The Bulls are 13-1 at home and have won 11 of their last 13 games overall. The victory also was Chicago's fifth straight, equaling its season high. Orlando lost for the seventh straight time. It was their 11th loss in a row on the road.

It was the seventh time this season that Jordan, who leads the NBA with a 33-point average, has scored at least 40. Scottie Pippen added 19 for Chicago. Terry Catledge led Orlando with 27 points while Nick Anderson and Sidney Green each had 17. PORTLAND 118, UTAH 89 Clyde Drexler scored 25 points and Kevin Duckworth added 22 in the host Trail Blazers' first victory over the Jazz in seven tries.

Drexler also had nine assists and four blocked shots as Portland opened a 19-point first-half lead, held off a third-quarter Utah rally, then pulled away for good. Drexler scored 17 points in the first half. Reserve Mark Bryant had a career-high 15 rebounds for Portland, helping the Trail Blazers to a 48-41 advantage on the backboards. John Stockton scored 20 points and made nine of 10 shots for Utah. He also had 11 assists.

Karl Malone was only six-of-15 and scored 18 points, 11 below his season average. SEATTLE 140, MIAMI 110 Dale Ellis scored 12 of his 26 points in the third quarter when Seattle took control and Avery Johnson had a career-high 17 assists for the host SuperSonics. The Heat, who lost their ninth straight game, led 56-54 at halftime but were outscored 23-12 in the first six minutes of the third period. Miami coach Ron Rothstein was ejected after getting two technicals at the end of the third quarter for arguing a call with officials Don Vaden and Bill Oakes. Dana Barros made both free throws and Shawn Kemp's five points on two dunks and a free throw gave Seattle a 100-84 lead with 10:44 left.

The Sonics scored 50 points in the final period. kncouver knocks off Wishington, 5-2 NCAA INVESTIGATES UTEP PROGRAM The NCAA is conducting a preliminary investigation of the basketball program at the University of Texas-El Paso amid allegations that players used cars belonging to coaches and boosters. "We do not feel we are guilty of any wrongdoing, but the publicity generated by these stories has caused the NCAA to begin a preliminary inquiry into this matter," Hovious said. Gervin, 37, has been playing for Quad Cities in the Continental Basketball Association, but has returned to his San Antonio home and reportedly may play in Europe. Gervin hasn't played in the NBA since 1986.

FOOTBALL NCAA UNCOVERS 14 VIOLATIONS AT CLEMSON The NCAA has sent Clemson an official letter of inquiry after a preliminary investigation of its football team uncovered 14 alleged rule violations, ranging from monetary payments to illegal recruiting contacts, the school said Friday.

David Berst, assistant executive director for enforcement for the NCAA, said in a letter Thursday to university president Max Lennon it appears the school violated NCAA rules. The alleged rule violations occurred from 1984 to 1988 and involved both players and recruits, according to the school, which received the NCAA letter Friday. The alleged violations include the payment of $15 to $150. gifts of a cap and sweatshirt. Improper purchase of meals and auto transportation and violation of recruiting rules that limit the number of visits and period of time when visits can be made, the school said.
