Dan O'Brien is one of the few to get fed up enough to do something. Without the safety net of another Job. the sports reporter producer at WTHR (Channel 13) is getting out of television news. "This is not the business I started In 15 years ago." said O'Brien. 36.

an Indianapolis native who has worked in such major media markets as Pittsburgh. Miami and Washington. D.C. "These days I see less of a priority put on accuracy and balance in both newspapers and TV news." The messengers are part of the problem. O'Brien thinks.

"I've worked with people who couldn't pass the most basic Steve Hall skills tests." said the graduate of the University of Missouri's Journalism school. "They make a mistake on something, and you think, my God, that's fifth-grade geography: And we're supposed to be the people accurately reporting the facts to hundreds of thousands of viewers. "There's no question the business has gotten more show biz: I understand that one function of the news is to entertain. But I think putting out accurate information should be our first priority. If I want to be entertained.

I'll watch the Andy Griffith reruns at 6 o'clock." O'Brien has no problem with Channel 13. He's talking about Journalism in general. He also tired of 60- to 70-hour weeks and a feeling that colleagues were getting by with doing less. Sports reporting began to seem like his whole life. O'Brien, who's single, missed going to concerts, plays and other things he enjoys.

"For that matter. I missed being able to attend a sporting event, have a beer, enjoy it and go home without worrying about who I'm going to interview afterwards." he said. "A lot of times I Just didn't have any questions to ask this or that player. It all boiled down to a simple conclusion they won. or they got their butts kicked.

I really didn't look forward to listening to some player whine about the unfairness of the referee." O'Brien realizes he might sound like a whlner. Compared say, coal mining, sports broadcasting is not the most strenuous career in the world. "A lot of people would love to do what I've done," he said. Pause. "They're welcome to it." Sale complete WXIN (Channel 59) finally has a new owner.

Chase Communications' acquisition of WXIN. part of a $120 million purchase of holdings from Outlet Communications Inc. was completed last week. The sale was announced last year and had been pending subject to the approval of the Federal Communications Commission. The purchase makes the Hartford.

No drastic changes are expected at WXIN. said Chase President Ed Karlik. who was in Indianapolis Tuesday. "We liked what we saw in Atlanta and Indianapolis in terms of operation and the direction the stations were taking." Karlik said. Since its debut in 1985. the local Sunrise has sometimes earned higher ratings than the network news. Recently. WISH (Channel 8) premiered an hour-long newscast at 6 a.m. and made the daybreak news contest more of a horse race.

SAT. 9-4 Robert By JOAN HANAUER UNITED PRESS INTERNATIONA New York Four new series hit the screen last week, and the winner was NBC's A Family for Joe with Robert Mitchum, which did its part in helping NBC again win the ratings race, it was reported Tuesday.

Even more help was The Cosby Show, which was No. 1 for the 11th time in the 27-week-old season, and Ernest Hemingway's The Old Man and the Sea, which was the top Sunday movie. The Mitchum sitcom aired Saturday and ranked in a tie for 31st. It will go into its regular slot at 8 p.m. Saturday, replacing ALF.

ALF will be on hiatus, and whether it will come back next season remains in question. Two of the other new series were on CBS Sydney in 59th place and Normal Life tying for 67th, which does not sound as if CBS has solved its young comedy problems. The fourth newcomer was The Outsiders on Fox. which came in tied for 62nd with the highest rating ever for a Fox dramatic series. The NBC win on Saturday night, in which it beat the combined ratings of ABC and CBS by 17 percent, suggests that there aren't enough viewers on that night to support the combined network.
