WEDNESDAY, JUNE 20, 1973 THE INDIANAPOLIS STAR PAGE 43 QUA BtTEiSBl NA HOUNB TODAY Cook en's Golf Victors ie Head City Worn Kyle, By CAROLYN The Country Club of Indianapoliswith 300 the team trophy which goes to four women from the same club with the lowest net qualifying round total. Mrs. Lautner and Jean Ahrendts, both of Heather Hills, tied for the low net qualifying prize with 71. Greentrce Country Club will host the 1974 tournament it over what she called her "best round," could provide stiff competition today for little Kyle. THE FINAL match saw the Country Club's Chris Roark lose only a single hole the first in pounding out a 6 and 4 triumph over Heather Hill's Jean Ahrendts.

At last night's banquet, Miss Wilhoite was re-elected president of the association. riCKEUING A pigtailed little girl named Kyle O'Brien and willowy Cookie English, the host club's big hope, gave par an awful scare at the Country Club of Indianapolis yesterday to lead favorites into today's quarterfinal round of the 53d Indianapolis Women's Golf Association Tiny Kyle scorched the front-side in 35 to hold a 4-up lead over talented Anna Marie Hale, a 16-y a -o 1 then coasted to a 4 and 3 victory, playing 15 holes in 3 over par as proud papa "Buckshot," of basketball fame, lurked behind the big sycamores flanking the fairways. While Kyle's pigtails flapped in the breeze, Cookie English, the 1971 champion who still was miffed at the home course she knows so well bringing her to her knees on Monday, charged back with the day's best golf. COOKIE birdied three of the first nine holes, dropping a 6-footer at the first green, sinking an 18-footer at the ninth and missing an ace by a shade at the sixth to hold a 5-up lead at the turn over Ann Knall of Meridian Hills, whose outgoing 41 was anything but shaggy. Cookie, too, was out in 35, one under par, and she closed out the match at the 13th, 6 and 5, just one shot over par for that distance.

was announced last night. Vida missed the green, but the shots that took the stuffing our of Vida came at 16 and 17. Mrs. Fulmer charged a putt 10 feet past the hole at 16, but made the recovery bunt to halve the hole. THEN, at 17, Vida hit two great shots home on the 393-yard hole while Mrs.

Fulmer missed her drive, and hooked her second under a tree before slapping an iron shot 15 feet above the hole. Vida seemingly had the hole won, but Mrs. Fulmer coolly stroked her par putt into the cup to again gain a half and maintain her 1-up lead. The final hole was halved in pars, sending Mrs. Fulmer, a longtime marvelous competitor, into today's tussle with Cookie.

Today, Mrs. English comes to grips with her good friend Sue Fulmer of Meridian Hills, who, just as predicted, came back like a tiger alter a disappointing qualifying round. She had no choice but to fire up yesterday. VIDA Bailey, THE art department, she says, at Sce-cina Memorial High School, took two of the first three holes from Mrs. Fulmer and played her even the rest of the front nine to hold a 2-up lead at the turn.

Out in 42 to Vida's 40, Mrs. Fulmer knocked in a 5-footer at the 10th for a birdie and played the next eight holes In 2 over par to eke out a 1-up win. Mrs. Fulmer's first advantage came at the 15th when Medalist Ann Wilhoile didn't score as well as Monday, but, although holding only a 1-up lead at the turn over Debbie Hall of Woodland, closed out the 17-year-old, 3 and 2. ANOTHER of the teen-age terrors, Theresa Hession of Hillcrest, had to go to the 18th hole to oust Susie Johnston of Speedway, 2 up.

Theresa was 1-under per ofr the final four holes, winding up with a 79 to serve notice she's not to be taken lightly. In other matches, last year's runner-up, Polly Nicely of Meridian Hills, took four of the final seven holes, capping her surge with a 5-foot birdie putt at 16 to take a 4 and 2 victory over Speedway's Mar-cia Short.
