Mullaney, coach of the Colonels since 1971, is expected to announce his resignation today and his selection as coach of the Stars will be announced in Salt Lake City at the same time. Mullaney will replace La-Delle Anderson at Utah. Anderson quit at the end of last season to become athletic director at Utah State. A SPOKESMAN for the Colonels would neither confirm nor deny that Mullaney would the Colonels.

A source close to the Colonels said "several possibilities" were under consideration as replacements for Mullaney, but no decision has been reached. The Colonels have not announced a replacement for Storen, either. Mullaney indicated his decision to leave had been sparked in part by Storen's resignation. "I appreciated way Mike let me do my job," Mullaney said. "Now that was gone and I couldn't be sure what the next man might bring." Mullaney said the move to Utah "may work out for resign.

The team spokesman said, however, that a major announcement is scheduled for 10 a.m. (KST) today. Miillaney's decision to leave the Colonels marks the second major I gf a ion in the ABA team's camp since the recent acquisition of the franchise by John Y. Brown whose wife became the chairman of the all-woman board of directors. Mike Storen resign two weeks ago as president and general manager of the team after he and Brown failed to reach agreement on terms of a new contract.

Mullaney's intention to resign had been a source of speculation for several weeks. At one point, a Providence (R.I.) group which attempted to purchase the ABA Memphis Tarns had Indicated they would pursue Mullaney if they obtained the franchise. Mullaney had once coached at Providence. During Mullaney's two seasons with the Colonels, the team compiled a 121-44 record. This past season the team advanced to the seventh andfinal game of the championship playoff scries before losing to the Indiana Pacers.

Mullaney coached the National Basketball Association Los Angeles Lakers for two seasons before joining the Colonels. He has one year left on a three-year contract with "MAYBE THK next coach in here will look at thngs differently," he said. "For me, it will be refreshing to work with a different set of people who will have a different set of problems." The resignations came in the wake of a series of sales involving the Colonels since April. The team, originally owned by five Louisville men, including Brown, was sold to a Cincinnati group, Cincinnati Sports in April. Last month the Browns repurchased 52.5 per cent of the Colonels' stock.
