One of Steve's best subjects is mathematics. He's not sure of a career yet, but engineering has claimed more chess masters than any other field, according to Byrne.

"Chess," says Byrne, "is a system of space relationships. As in a chess player must visualize structures in space." IT IS a popular misconception that chess games require several days and that both players stare silently at the board. Steve and his friends are "just boys" and like any teenagers, they usually occupy any spare moment by munching on something or sipping a cold drink. A game that goes 75 minutes is a long one. Forty-five minutes is closer to the average.

Steve, of course, devours books and periodicals on chess by the dozen. These are filled with diagrams and chess puzzles which are a big aid to developing one's game. No American has held the world chess championship since 1862. Russia has monopolized the title since 1927 (except for 1935-1937 when a Netherlands player had it). A Brooklyn schoolboy may win it back for the United States.

Then he showed it to more experienced players, including Lutes. Lutes, who is compiling a new book on chess moves, explained the so-called "Trattner Offense" to experts and masters at tournaments throughout the Midwest. Many of them think it is an improvement. Lutes plans to incorporate it in his book. Not many 14-year-olds can claim such a distinction.

Steve is a member of the junior chess club at the Jewish Community Center. Last winter he played the 21 other members at the same time. Steve didn't lose a match. Steve has scored points in the Indiana State Chess Tournament and the Columbus (O.) Invitational, competing against players four times his age. STEVE FEELS he has learned a lot about the game by teaching fellow pupils at Westlane Junior High School.

Two of his best pupils, Jack Frisch and Ronnie Domont, scored in the recent city meet after playing the game only 90 days. Steve, Jack and Ronnie rank one-two-three scholas-tically in their class and all have many outside interests. Steve was a member of the school basketball and baseball teams, a patrol boy and president of his church young people's group. In "his day" he was a Little League all-star catcher.
