SPOTTING talent in young players Is very, very difficult, according to Donald Byrne of Indianapolis a man who should know. Byrne is the fourth ranking player in the United States, although he has been fairly inactive during his five years' residence in Indiana. He was on the American team that whipped the Russians two years ago at Moscow.

Byrne has played against Bobby Fischer and admits he has seen no one here (or anywhere else) who looks as -good. It's a long step up from competing in city and state meets to the "big time" of national and international competition, and few players have the innate ability to make the transition. About the oniy way one can find out, Byrne says, is to play the best ones. But, he doesn't recommend that until one really is ready. LET'S TAKE a look at a typical Hoosier youngster who wants more than anything else to make his mark in the chess world.

Steve Trattner is 14 years old, an honor pupil at Indianapolis' Westlane Junior High School, a basketball and baseball player. He's been playing chess only two years, but he's come a long way. He comes by his chess Interest honestly. Both his parents, Mr. and Mrs.

Robert Trattner, have played the game for years. Even his sisters, 7-year-old Paula, and Roberta, 10, play chess about every day. When there's a chess game in progress at the Trattners' and there usually is there's always somebody waiting to challenge the winner. If it isn't one of the family members, it is one of Steve's friends. Steve was runner-up in the 1959 city tournament to Wendell Lutes.

The title match was an Interesting one, because Steve had studied a year under Lutes. "Steve is better for his age than anyone else around here," Lutes says. He says Steve has developed rapidly but as Steve is well aware he still has a long way to go before he'll be a ranking player. Two years from now, Steve will be 16 and that's the present age of Bobby Fischer. A FAVORITE pastime for chess buffs is "solving" standard chess openings.

This means coming up with a better defense than the one in the manuals for an opening series made by the opponent. Steve found what he considers to be a flaw in the so-called "Cunningham defense" a pattern that dates back to the English coffeehouse days of 1780. He checked and re-checked the possibilities arising from his variation. (Concluded en Pogt 28) 4344.1) BLOCK'S. MieiiepeH-.
