Cavaliers president Nick Mileti said the operation would be performed Wednesday at St. Luke's Hospital here by team physician Dr. Jon Hardacre.

The surgery was recom-mended, Mileti said, after Carr's foot was examined earlier this month by noted New York orthopedic surgeon Dr. James Nicholas. Carr broke his right foot twice last summer. "We wanted to do the operation now to give Austin time to strengthen his foot," Dr. Hardacre said.

"What this operation does is stimulate the body to restart the healing process on the bone." Despite the fact that 30-year old rookie Carmen Fanzone drove in three runs to lead the Cubs to a 5-3 victory over the Montreal Expos, the Canadians' 12th straight road loss of the season, Kessinger was the star of the show. Kessinger singled his first time up and then the count went to 3-1 on second batter Glen Beckert. Kessinger explained the ensuing comedy: "I was running with the pitch and tried to watch and see what Beckert was doing. I saw his half swing and didn't know he had walked.

I slid into second and (Ron) Hunt tagged me out. The umpire called me out. As a result of BecrVert's walk, Williams said: "Kessinger was allowed one base but when he stepped off the base while the ball was still in play and Hunt tagged him, he was out." Iowa 7. Wichita 1.
