Probably the happiest was veteran Duane Carter (left), who came out of retirement after serving as USAC competition director, to average 142.795 in the No. 37 Smokey's Reverse Torque Special. Johnny Boyd (center) also made it, hitting 142.812 in the No. 33 Bowes Seal Fast Special. At right, chief Mechanic John Blouch of the No.

Record Johnnie Parsons, the 1930 winner in the Bardahl Special, and Pat Flaherty, the 1956 victor, in the No. 64 John Zink Special.

So, at this writing there isn't a former winner in the field. PARSONS MADE one at-tempt yesterday but was yellow-flagged by his crew after averaging only 140 for the first two laps. Flaherty made no attempt Also charged with unsuccessful attempts were Paul Goldsmith of St. Clair Shores, Mich, in the No. 99 Dcmlcr Special which was runncrup car in the 1959 "500" with the late George Amick at the wheel and Jimmy Daywalt of Indianapolis in the No.

THOMSON has been driv-ing race cars since 1933 but didn't get to the Speedway until 1953. His best finish was fourth place in 1955, when he worked his way up from the 33d starting position with an outstanding driving job in a dirt track car. He is the defending Eastern sprint car champion and finished third in the USAC National Championship Standings last year.

He won four championship races, more than any other driver. plu 2it (hildn. PI I in the Kentucky Derby two weeks ago, but was withheld from Maryland's famous three- year-old contest. ROYAL ORBIT got into heaps of trouble when he made his late move in the Derby behind tiring horses, and wound up fourth in a field of 17. But Willie Harmatz, riding in a Preakncss for the first time, gave a Pimlico crowd of 31.506 plenty to cheer about as the well-liked Sword Dancer was just another runner-up. First Landing, ridden by Eddie Arcaro, finished a tired ninth in the field of 11 starters.

The Claiborne Farm's Dunce, a disappointing seventh in the Derby, came in third, three lengths behind Sword Dancer and 2'j lengths in front of G. Robinson's Marauder, the early pacesetter. This was the case of the "always and bridesmaid but never a bride" in a big race finally catching the top prize the world's richest for 3-year-old horses. Royal Orbit is owned by Mrs. Hclina Braunstein, a chic former New York actress who lives in Beverly Hills, Cal.

Her husband, Jacques Braunstein, died a few months ago. SHE THINKS Royal Orbit is the greatest race horse in the world and was here to accept the record winner's check of $136,200. The larg-est net jack pot for a previous Preakness winner was the S9S.005 hauled down by Calumet Farms Faultless in 1947. Royal Orbit, third choice in the mutucls, returned $15.20, $5.80 and $4.20 for $2. Sword Dancer, who was the 17-10 second choice to First Landing at 16-10, paid $3 and $2.20.

Royal Orbit was clocked in 1:57 flat for the mile and 316ths on a fast track and under sunny skies in cool weather. This compared with the track record of .1:54 set by Nashua in winning the 1955 Preakness. For the trainer of Royal Orbit Reggie Cornell, a jovial roly-poly native born Canadian it was his greatest triumph and took away a lot of the sting from the 1938 Preakness. LAST YEAR Cornell trained the famed Silky Sullivan who had won the Santa Anita Derby but never got any-where in the Kentucky Derby and the Prekness, where he finished far back. Until yesterday Royal Orbit had won only once In seven starts this season.

However, the reddish-chestnut son of Royal Charger-Admiral's Belle by War Admiral lived up to his relatives reputation. JOHNNY THOMSON No. 3 Racing Associates Spl. -Ny Time Speed 145.537 Jl 1:01.81 143.603 akA 1:01.42 146.532 145.962 01.66 Totals 4:06.73 145.903 DICK RATHMANN No. 73 McNamara Spl.

(AP)- John Mostyn, 18-year-old senior from New Jersey's Bergen Catholic High School, broke the oldest existing schoolboy record and tied a world record when he was clocked in 9.3 seconds for 100 yards at the Englewood Memorial meet yesterday.

Jesse Owens sot the schoolboy mark in 1933 with 9.4 while Mel Patton, Dave Sime ind Bobby Morrow have 9.3 times in the book. Mostyn was clocked In 9.3 by four timers. One watch caught him in 9.2, another in 9.4. Officials said they would submit Mostyn's. mark as a national schoolboy record immediately.

There were no wind gauges on hand, but chief judge Bill Carr said there was only a cross-wind when Mostyn hit the tape. 1-Lap Concluded From Page 1 the fourth row, at least temporarily. AVERAGE OF the dozen first-day qualifiers was which compares with an average of 143.445 for the 33-car field which started last year's race. Filling out the second row along with Dick Rathmann and Grim is Rodger Ward of Los Angeles, who put the Leader Card Special in the race at 144.035. Third-row tenants are three longtime drivers.

Bob Veith took the inside spot at 144.023 in the John Zink Special. Eddie Johnson hit an even 144 a mathematical rarity at the Speedway in the Bryant Heating Special. Gene Hartley averaged 143.575 in the Drewry's Special. BETWEEN BRANSON and Carter in the fourth row is Johnny Boyd of Fresno, whose speed in the No. 33 Bowes Seal Fast Special was 142.812.

Boyd switched cars with teammate Jud Larson of Tampa, after Boyd's blew a piston in practice. The car was being repaired and Larson may try to qualify it today. Twenty-one starting positions still will be available when trials are resumed from noon until 6 p.m. today. Speedway gates will open at 8 a.m.

and the track will be available for practice starting at 9 a.m. Those who came yesterday to see the Novis were disappointed. The brutish, supercharged cars which have long been the darlings of the public experienced more of the trouble they've been, having with their fuel injection systems and popoff valves and neither made an attempt to qualify. Drivers are Paul Russo and Dempsey Wilson. Neither did the defending champion of the Jirrlmy Bryan, who wasn't running to his satisfaction in the Belond A.P.

Muffler Special which has won the last two races. Another outstanding car still to qualify is the Wolcott Special driven by Len Sutton who was just ready to pull away from the starting line when the final gun sounded at 6 p.m. Also out of the fold yet are Timing Chart Min.
