tested in a twilight opening session at the University of Iowa, Johnson successfully de fended his long jump title with a distance of 24-11, shading his 1970 winning of 24-9. Pat Onyango placed sixth in the long jump to give the indoor champion Badgers a first big total of 11 points. Dykstra's surprising discus triumph gave the lllini 10 points. INDIANA WAS third after the two events with nine points, followed by Michigan, Ohio State and Purdue, each with eight points; Northwestern with six, and Minnesota with two. Iowa and Michigan State failed to score.

Indiana also ran into trouble in three running events as sprinter Larry Highbaugh pull ed up lame competing in the long jump and failed to qualify in the 100-yard dash. The Hoosiers lost another tential qualifier when Doug Chokey was disqualified for running on the lane line as he placed third his 880-yard heat. As a result, the Hoosiers' chances seemed slim in to day's 16-event finals in which Wisconsin, Michigan State and Illinois are favored to make a strong title bid. MICHIGAN STATE placed 12 qualifiers into seven Saturday finals, including defending champion Herb Washington in the 100-yard dash. However, the strongest showing in the sprints was turned in by Ohio State's fleet pair of Jim Harris and Jerry Hill.

Harris won his 100-yard heat in the fastest time of 9.5 while Harris and Hill each took his 220-dash heats in the times of 21.3 and 21.4.
