Cyca Lugar testing the waters in New Hampshire 'INDIANAPOLIS (AP) Sen Richard Lugar is in New Hampshire this weekend for three days of handshaking and interviews to test the waters for a possible presiden tial bid The Hoosier Republican and at least eight other GOP hopefuls are scheduled to address a fund raising dinner tonight that about 1400 party activists are expected to attend But events legislators say they support reforms to the current property tax laws but believe that a new bill is taking the right approach Reps John Gregg Sandborn and Rick McConnell Princeton said Saturday they voted against the House measure which passed this week because it failed to provide major tax relief efforts and included provisions that would have cut wages for people in the construction industry The bill was a bipartisan effort and took several months to complete Gregg told Knox County residents who attended a Meet Your Legislature session at the Holiday Inn The proposal now goes to the Indiana Senate If approved the provisions would provide close to $600 million in property tax relief over the next five years The average person would save about 35 percent on property taxes Gregg said But he said those savings would be accomplished in part by placing restrictions on growth in school trans portation and construction costs Gregg who serves as House minority leader said he could not support the measure because of the impact it would have bn those entities The bill would eliminate the prevailing wage law which ensures decent salaries are paid to those working on see LEGISLATORS page A8 Teams try out trivia skills at Quiz Bowl By DEANNA RATTS staff writer The Cargill Literacy Quiz Bowl allowed all teams a chance to test their trivia knowledge and help raise funds for adult literacy But it was the Snider Chiropractic Clinic that walked away with the championship after finishing its final round in a 90 50 victory over the Vincennes Rotary Club think it was just said Richard Snider whose team was competing for the first time was a lot of fun participating and just watching the other teams Other members included Ken Booth Andrew Jackson Eldon Scherer John Hitchcock and Brian Jones Altogether 32 teams competed in the annual event which benefits the Knox County Literacy Program Director Stephen Cochran said $3100 was raised through registra tion fees and Vermillion Partners make learning a pleasure not a chore By DEANNA RATTS staff writer At least once a week John Dognaux and Joe Edmunds get together over a good book A tutor with the Knox County Literacy Program Dognaux has been helping Edmunds with his reading writing and spelling skills for the past year The men were honored Saturday for their work at a reception that followed the annual quiz bowl The event helps raise funds for adult literacy efforts in the com munity Also recognized were tutor Robert Conklin and learner rank Woolard 4 Literacy program director Stephen Cochran praised both learners for their desire to improve their reading abilities and to reach the goals they have set for them selves am impressed by the good progress they have made and by their he said kept coming each week and apply ing Cochran said Edmunds was con sidered a non reader when he first entered the program and only recognized the word Today Edmunds has moved up two grade levels and is helping build a house as part of a VU construction project Hard work dedication By PAULETTE GRAY feature writer She lays brick And hangs drywall And builds houses and bams Kim Hollis says she can do any thing the men do in her all male classes at Vincennes University But the fact is she has done a lot more Hollis just received her second Indiana Award for Excellence in vocational education a first time accomplishment by any VU stu dent male or female In 1993 she earned her first title for outstanding achievement in architectural drafting On Wednesday she was honored again this time to recognize her work in construction technology Both courses of study are male dominated fields where Hollis drew up a blueprint for her own success than anything I vyanted to win the respect of the men in my all male said Hollis She did just that but it come quickly or lightly showed them I could carry as much as they she recalled of a back breaking class assign ment last fall in which the 14 men and Hollis had to move a stack of plywood 34 inch sheets that measured 4 by 8 feet Lining up with the rest of the boys Hollis heaved one of the heavy sheets over her back and began hauling not saying that some of the guys stronger than I she said at the same time some of them as strong as I By the time the plywood stack was moved that day a new respect had emerged for the spunky lady eager to pull her own weight A Vincennes native Hollis attended both Ball State University and VU after she grad uated from Lincoln High School in 1982 She withdrew from both institutions because of financial problems In 1985 she enlisted in the US Army and served for five years in the military police Along the way she married and had two children Jeremy now 7 and JD 5 Although Hollis says she never
