MEL SMITH (317) 635-2754 Hilton Hotel, Downtown of the young people in this country are on just about every aspect of Social Security.

Among the key points of ignorance: millions yes, millions of Social Security ben-neflciaries are well below the age of 62 or 65 and are far from retirement. Here are answers to a few other intriguing questions: Q. At what age should I get my son a Social Security card? He is 3. A. Most people do not need Social Security cards until they reach working age.

But if a child goes to work at an early age say, as child model or child actor he will need a Social Security number because his earnings must be reported and credited to the Social Security record that will be set up and maintained for him throughout his working lifetime. Since the Social Security number is used by the Internal Revenue Service as a taxpayer identification number in processing Federal tax returns, a child who has a bank account, stocks or other income-producing securities in his own name will need a Social Security number for that purpose. Q. Does a bride have to change Social Security numbers when she marries? A. No.

She should just get a new Social Security card with her new name but with the same number she had before. Q. Can a divorced wife get wife's benefits when her ex-husband retires?
