He was backed up by a 10-hit attack that produced single tallies in the third and eighth innings. Bob (Riverboat) Smith, who suffered his first big-league loss, gave up the Orioles' fourth-inning tally when Bob Nieman walked with two out and came around on singles by Gus Triandos and Dick Williams. Murray Wall gave up the other tally on a double, by Triandos and aingles by pinch-hitter Gene Woodling and Brooks Robinson, who had three hits in the nightcap. (UP) Big Arnie Portocarrero snapped the Baltimore Orioles' losing streak at eight games when he hurled a fancy four-hitter to beat the Boston Red Sox, 2-0, yesterday in the second game of a twin bill after the Sox had won the opener by the same score behind Frank Sullivan's two-hitter. Frank Malzone's two-run homer in the third inning gave Sullivan the runs he needed to win the opener. FIRST CAMI Chicago Detroit Pittsburgh (UPI) The Pittsburgh Pirates spotted the Milwaukee Braves four home runs yesterday but hammered out 18 hits to win the nightcap, 12-6, after the World Champa ons rallied in the ninth inning of the opener for a 7-4 victory, All the Braves' homers, in cluding a pair by Del Crandall were yielded by starter Curt Raydon with none on base. Crandall shot his sixth homer over the left field fence in the third inning and his next one went the same route in the seventh. Pinch-hitter Harry Hane-brink followed Crandall to the plate in the seventh and slammed his third homer into the right field stands. Wes Covington opened the second inning with a shot into the right field stands for his sixth homer.

In addition to Bell in the broad jump, Indiana teammate Wil lie May is a heavy favorite in the hurdles and Purdue's Billy Jones tops the pole vault field. Indiana and Purdue Univer sity athletes will be competing unattached. Bell already holds state AAU track records for the 100, 220 and broad jump. May slammed the two hurdle races in last year's meet. Two outstanding entries from last week's state high school track meet are expect ed to be on hand, Tom Sei-fert of Fort Wayne North who accounted for the only rec ord in the shot put and Terry White of Hobart, only double winner in the dashes.

DICK MACE of DePauw, the former Indianapolis Tech state high school low hurdle record holder who set a junior 100-yard dash record in the AAU affair two years ago, heads the list of 100-yard dash contenders. Mace won the 100 last week In the Little State meet. A number of leading college athletes from Indiana, Purdue, Manchester, Hanover, Evans-ville, Indiana Central, Butler and Indiana State are slated to compete. Indianapolis Track Club, Terre Haute 40 and 8, Evans- villa YMCA, Fort Wayne AAC, Indiana Central and Hanover Track Club are six leading contenders for the team title. Following the final event on the program, a special four- mile race is scheduled be tween Indianapolis Shortridge and Tipton high school runners.

The two holiday wins pulled the White Sox even with the .500 mark with 19 wins and 19 losses and lifted them into a tie for third place. SMITH'S dramatic catch in the opener was the play of the day. He leaped high to haul down a long drive by Frank Boiling for the second out of the ninth inning. Base-runner Lou Skizas had left first base and was around second when he was easily doubled up to end the game.
